ive emailed a marina about a sea ray for sale....
I asked the question about vat/ce markings

Is the boat CE marked, VAT Paid? We have no history with the boat apart from the bill of sale for the current owner. Having checked the HIN number it was built in Cork, Ireland plant.

this was the response. Would this be standard practise or sufficient enough? bill of sale should cover the vat query i assume and being build in ireland classed as within the eu for ce marking?

I'm no expert, but my thoughts are that if the boat is low value and old then vat is irrelevant (effectively) - CE marking is required for newer boats, but not sure about older ones.

TBH there are SO many boats for sale right now that if you don't get a full and detailed answer from this person, ignore them and keep looking.

In fairness to the broker, he is an agent for the current owner. You might like him to have all your answers, but he may not have, and boat value dependent, he might not want to spend his days chasing the seller.
I do not know the value or age of the boat, but if it is a sportboat, some year old and been through a few owners, it is a bit ambitious hoping that paper trail has survived. If it is a two month old latest model still in the wrappers and costing hundreds of thousands, I think you might expect a bit more !
Did Searay built boats in Cork? Seems a surprise. You could email Searay in USA...

1997 - would that be classed as new enough?

Was more a general query as to what paperwork was with it, id of assumed you'd have kept something along the way

If it is a smaller sportsboat, then no, I would not expect much paperwork.
I would check that CE plate -that it is not an import with a bit of plastic CE stuck on somewhere, and evidence that the guy has owned it for some time, and some service bills, insurance etc.- ie good suggestion that he does indeed own it.
Not alot more, after that you or the broker can do.

Bj Marine in Ireland were/are the main searay importers

I believe back in the day the boats were imported in us spec and bj Marine converted them to UK spec. Their boats always had a Irish clover emblem on them. My old searay came through them.

It might pay to call them direct about any history

1997 predates the RCD and CE marking so there will be no plate

Ah re.read. .I thought the broker implied a CE plate. ..sorry,my error
Though I mentioned it as sticking on a plate is not unknown...

Every boat I have had regardless of size and age ( not including ribs ) has had the original bill of sale to prove vat has been paid.
Like above, it's a buyers market make sure you get everything you want as somebody else will only want it when you come to sell.

budget, tight lol

im looking around the 13k mark ideally with a trailer. im after a 4 berth as i have 2 children

im looking at sea rays, 220, 230 and 240 sundancers.
bayliner, 2355, 2455 cieras

i had been looking at falcon 23spc's and fairline sprints but the wife prefers the shape, as do i actually of the american offerings, especially with the centre screen opening.

im aware they are all petrol, but ive convinced myself a mercruiser setup is what id like opposed to an older volvo penta effort.

the boat in question from my initial post was a 1997csea ray 240csundancer with some cosmetic work needed and a rebuilt engine and new leg last year.

im aware im not going to get a whole book and a half of history, but i would like to make sure that the important paperwork if relevant is there.
