Just for Pete 7 - this is the first of my anchor threads for April.

There should be a second thread in a week or so, which will upset Pete 7 as he does not like my anchor threads, as Steve aka Panope mentions at the end of this video that he will release his Lewmar Epsilon video in about 1 week. He says he has done all the test - he just needs to edit the video.

Its worth watching this vid as it will then be fresh in your mind when he releases the Epsilon vid - and this will make a reasonable comparison.

This video is interesting in that Steve identifies a 'possible' flaw in the anchor - it is asymmetrical (he says) and this reduces the performance. From what he shows it is asymmetrical and the performance is adequate - but not stellar. The lack of symmetry is really not large but it might underline that anchor making is slightly more sophisticated than many might imagine and 'copying' an anchor (with slight changes) might have a big impact on performance. Steve also points to a possible reason that the larger Rocna underperforms - but he does not go into much detail.

Worthy of note - much of the tension in the rode during the tests is about 500kgs - that's about the tension in a rode developed by a 45' yacht in 30 knots of wind with no snubber at short scope. In many of the tests the anchor is not set - it continues to move (and Steve is using a 7:1 scope). The M2 anchor being tested is about 20kgs, if I had a 45' yacht I would be looking to use a 'good' 20kg anchor, with a snubber or bridle. My view is - you should not need larger in 30 knots (nor 40 knots). However I don't 'know' the seabeds being used.

Now..... I might miss the release of the Epsilon vid, I might have other priorities. If you see it - simply initiate a thread, add the link - don't worry about 2 anchor threads in 1 month - there is a lot of interest in the Epsilon.
