Pancake Mix.

The thread in the other place about Pancake Day next Tuesday, reminded me of how handy cheap mix can be on a boat:

Aunt Bessie's Pancake Mix 480g (Makes 16)

It keeps well without a fridge, only needs water and egg to make up, and can provide a main as well as a pudding. As we know, a great favourite in Brittany.
Almost anything savory can be inserted to make a main and almost anything sweet can be added to make a pudding.

The Dutch appear to make their pancakes with a proportion of buckwheat, which improves the texture. We've not tried it at home/boat.

Alternatively even cheaper plain flour, eggs, milk, and a dash of salt and you're good to go!

Buckwheat pancakes are delicious. A Breton speciality (galettes de blé noir) and a favourite meal of mine. Put a galette in the pan, add sausage, egg, onion & grated cheese, put another on the top and serve with a nice cidre bouché. A meal fit for a king. Well, maybe only a duke, since they didn't have kings in Brittany.

The glorious Dutch pancake (pannenkoeken), there used to be a fabulous little Dutch Pancake restaurant just off the Damrak in Amsterdam called the Kaisers Pancake House, they offered a variety of about 30 different flavoured pancakes, my favourite was 'Appel met Spek' (apple and bacon) with a helping of Stroop.

Having seen the adverts for Warner hotels I'm inclined to agree with your description, they look like just one level above a residential home for the elderly. (And before someone accuses me of ageism I am in my mid 70's)

Ah, my daughters favourite breakfast. Cooking them is fairly straight forward process with some people being apprehensive at the tossing stage. I cant see you having any difficulty.

As anyone who lives on the Continent and nearby places can tell you, pancakes arent just for one day a year but available in cafes every day.


Within a five minute walk from where Im posting this sat on my luxury yacht in the glorious and warm sunshine, there are several such establishments. One of them sells nothing else but pancakes. Sweet and savoury. Yum.

Must be a poor people thing back there in Blighty.
