Anchored off Caernarvon marina Saturday evening when a Pan Pan goes out from a 45' mobo that's ran up a bank ( less than 5 meters from a channel marker bouy) on a falling tide. I'm about 1/4 mile away in a 32' raggie with an 18hp inboard so trundle down to see if he needs a tow. On arrival my offer of a line is declined, skipper saying he is well and truly stuck. 5 mins later a tradewind 44 arrives, passes a line and tows him off easily, both mobos going on their way without a word to me although with their usual courtesy Holyhead coastguard offered their thanks for my response. Beaumaris lifeboat was launched but didn't get there.
I have been left strangely irritated by this experience: I would not have sent a pan pan in these circumstances, although the mobo did sound panicky. This sort of ungrateful response would make me think twice before corking my bottle and hauling up the hook next time in similar circumstances.
