Anchored off Caernarvon marina Saturday evening when a Pan Pan goes out from a 45' mobo that's ran up a bank ( less than 5 meters from a channel marker bouy) on a falling tide. I'm about 1/4 mile away in a 32' raggie with an 18hp inboard so trundle down to see if he needs a tow. On arrival my offer of a line is declined, skipper saying he is well and truly stuck. 5 mins later a tradewind 44 arrives, passes a line and tows him off easily, both mobos going on their way without a word to me although with their usual courtesy Holyhead coastguard offered their thanks for my response. Beaumaris lifeboat was launched but didn't get there.
I have been left strangely irritated by this experience: I would not have sent a pan pan in these circumstances, although the mobo did sound panicky. This sort of ungrateful response would make me think twice before corking my bottle and hauling up the hook next time in similar circumstances.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was a little embarassed, and also made a judgement (in the heat of his moment) that you wouldn't be able to move him with your little engine/prop.

Please don't hesitate to offer assistance next time - and I am sure your won't really - you know you will feel good about it even if the other party won't appreciate it!

Even minor incidents can shake people up, and the skipper probably wasn't at his best to be thankful. Agree he probably thought you were underpowered to assists. Holyhead CG understands this scenario, and made sure to say a thank you. Well done, at least you were there to render assistance if the situation had turned pear-shaped. Don't let it sour your behaviour in future.

Sorry Duncan, my post was a reply to HiandDry and I largely agree with you.
Edited by tome on 13/06/2004 23:46 (server time).

No, you should have taken it to the helm like all proper sailors do!

How right you are. There were many of them out and about last night beating up all and sundry including policemen, fire and rescue services and anybody else who got in their drunken way after that bunch of no hopers called the England Football Team put on such a pathetic performance. I will be watching Graham Thorpe, Steve Harmison et al in future.

ungrateful b*****s

a couple of weeks ago a woman ran out of petrol in our remote lane. i went and got a gallon and got her on her way. she promised to replace it but of course never turned up. next time of course i will be reluctant to offer help. how often do you get treated as a mug before you stop trying to help others?

As a newcomer to the world of leisure sailing I must have missed some subtle interchange about size being important. Why should 18hp have a question mark?

The Vital Spark, being the smertest boat in the coastal trade, could make 6 knots with a following wind, but not all ships are as powerful as she was.

simply that the 45ft mobo, could, if a planning one, have more like 600-800hp on board and would relate this to the 18. Equally the one that got him off would have had a fair few hundred on tap.
Please note - I'm not making a call on whether it would or wouldn't have here - simply suggesting a state of mind that may well have existed.

ah indeed, bonny she was ... and wi' a following wind ra smut frae ra lum widnae hae dirtied yon boat. youse widnae want tae detract frae ra salvage value, now wid we?!

I once had the Padstow to Rock ferry trying to pull my 10m boat off. He didnt succeed despite all his power, and we had to call it a day before damage occurred to fittings.

I suspect he knew the big boat was coming and that starting to try with the small sailing boat might have delayed the whole exercise long enough to make it totally impossible.

Does anybody have any figures on what thrust 18 hp through the usual 2 blade sailing prop would generate?
