We are doing a week charter from Palermo in a week or so and wondering if anyone has any recommendations while we passage plan.
We plan to visit the Egadi Islands.
Thanks!
My recommendation, too late I realise but for future reference, is to go elsewhere. I kept my boat in Siciliy '22 -'23 and it is dirty, expensive and untrustworthy. Arriving in Menorca after my year there was redolent of the scene in Gladiator where Maximus passes into the Elysian Fields from the blood stained ground of the Colloseum.
Well, I'm glad I read that after....
So we had a great time, although probably wouldn't go back.
We wanted to sale to the Egolian Islands but due to wind etc. we sailed East to the larger but further Aoelian Islands. It was quite stormy with winds gusting upto 30 kts. Including a storm when we were at anchor for the night (so we maintained anchor watch, and constantly considered returning to a marina. We set the anchor well with a ridiculous amount of chain, and contacted a big boat anchored about 100m away to keep in touch (they were the only other boat). So that was a fun night, over 30 degrees at night with 20-25 kts of hair dryer. The next day we headed to a marina, and had to sit out a day due to storms.
We then stayed at anchor and buoys at the volcano islands where were lovely.
The marina we stayed at (Cefalu) was very expensive with no facilities, but served its purpose, and the town was lovely for the day when we didn't want to sail in a storm again.
Anyway, it was a fantastic week of sailing, with some good miles under the belt for the family. Our 3rd week on a Dufour (this time a 360 for the second time, the type of boat we are looking at).
Sadly the charter company blamed us for a crack in a hatch we was most certainly not us, but the check in was done at 10pm as we arrived late due to a cancelled flight...a lesson to photograph everything. I managed to basically get the office to push the damage fee right down to a small level, as it was the owner who they had to report to, who was convinced it was us, and had seen the boat before (which wasn't possible, as he was claiming that was the day after we got on the boat). I'll refer it as our Sicilian tax.
I was also pretty chuffed with my marina parking, as we had to change space a few times due to reasons unbeknown to me when we arrived back in Palermo. I nailed it every time, which was nice considering the bumper cars occurring with some other boats! Slow and steady is the way.
