painting the humber bridge!

Hmm there was a thing on abou t the humber brige and the seven and a few others .. Paint aint going to be enough! Each individual cross river strand is oxidising away, They arent supposed to be, and they cannot find a way to stopit. Its apparently going to shorten the life of the bridges by more than 50% !!!! I cannot remember which bridge but one of them is going to have to have a considerable maximum load reduction in the next 5 to 10 year ,with bigger reductions till closure every year .
Guess somebody made a bboo boo in the material specs or else in some other calculations

There was an interview with a bloke at the top of the bridge and he said
there is already considerable corrosion

Come on Gary....you forgot the most important and most messy job of the lot...

Remove, inspect and if OK, repack the wheel bearings  no doubt the worst job, but for a trailer boat, one of the most important.

Get a set of 'Bearing Buddies' or the equivelant, and take a grease gun with you in the tool kit, to pump up the buddies before launching, while the bearings are still warm from travelling.

Regarding No.22....just replace with new.

Check for any cracks or fatigue in the aft edge of the 'eye' of the trailer springs (where the bolt/s go through, and the nylon bush sits between it, and the bolt), especially if they are galvanised.

had the broker do 'em for me for that very reason mate just so I was sure I'd get the boat back in one piece with it being a 250ml trip round the welsh mountains... however, I've picked up 4 x Alko brake drums/hubs for a steal off Ebay that have new tapered sealed bearings fitted... they look like they'll do the job, slightly different design but PCD, diametre etc matches and will hopefully be a case of take the old drum off, grease the spline and slip the new ones on but I suspect these things are never that easy and I bet I'll end up attempting to swap the bearings over ;)

these are they: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120502060055&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

thanks for the advice on the other stuff.. the main thing with this trailer is it's been used for boat storage not transport.. the boat was literally launched by taking her out the compound, crossing the road and launching from the beach.. therefore, things have rusted solid due to lack of use.. hence the need to replace brake fittings, winch and the coupling.. the brake cables may need to be renewed too, other than that, everything else is solid and in good nick... got one of these on the way http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370305352042&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT (put offer in of £160 which was accepted) and have already fitted this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380160663364&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Fleabay is getting a fair bit of business out of me at the mo ;)

I assume your boats out side the house or near by on a trailer... I've got a similar to do list but it's 200 miles away :D the joys of boating...:D

The wires are snapping on the Forth Road Bridge at a rate of one a month They're listening to them breaking.

11,618 to go.

There seems to be very little painting on that 'to do' list

Perhaps this

would help

I think the comparison of boating with painting the Humber Bridge is not the right one.

Boating is more like the Humber Bridge debt which grows bigger every year and the income is not enough to service this debt!

"Construction of the Humber Bridge began in 1972, funded by Government loans. The cost (original estimate £28m) soon grew to £98m as a result of high price inflation during the construction period and delays caused by ground conditions, labour relations difficulties and adverse weather. By the time the bridge opened to traffic in 1981, loan charges had already brought the bridge debt up to £151m."
