Painting inflatable dinghy\'s

What sort of paint would be best for painting a name on a plastimo inflatable? I want something that will not be easily removed so I can paint the boat name on to deter the theiving b*stards that keep trying to nick it.

Inflatable boat paint, from Inflatable boat supplies, just google it.

Recommend SAC Graphics in Stourbridge for stick-on names. Various sizes and styles and almost imposs to remove from dinghy or boat!

Vinyl paint should do it. Halfords sell it, as do various car restoration places.

Do they really STICK to inflatables? Have tried some over the years and they always come off.
But if these ones really do work, then I'll be in touch with them.

Have used them for yonks. Kept the Avon dinghy when I changed boats so had to change name each time.
Removing the old name was only achieved by begging them for advice!
Stick? Like guano to a spade mate!

Honest - go with the grahic stick-on suggestion ...

I have an Avon that was painted by previous owner ... it's awful. The paint is forever flaking off, you can't go near it without getting it on clothes etc. OK - he painted whole dinghy - but just illustrates it's not all it's cracked up to be ... Yes it was proper inflatable paint.

I don't think there is anything that will not be removed with acetone or petrol.

There's a flexible paint designed for inflatables that is great for the boats' name but I've just redone the name on our life buoys (same paint) and I got the old letters off in ten minutes with acetone.

I think the best approach deter thieves is to put the name in a lot of visible places. And to increase the chances of getting the thing back put the name in a lot of hard to find places. Under EVERY slat on the floor. And varnish over the top. Both sides of a wooden transom. Write it in BIG letters with a permanent marker on the bottom. Remove the outboard mounting plate and carve it into the wood. Basically make it a pain for them to sell.

Another way to deter theft is to partially deflate it. I used to use an inflatable to get to our mooring. It had a slow leak and looked rather sad in the rack. It was never nicked though.

PS: If anyone wants an old red MAXXON inflatable with slight leak, free for collection from Bucks.

I have a 2.3m cheap XM dinghy and its an awful thing dough its only a year old. So, here is what i did after my last expensive one was robbed!!!
Its grey in colour so i threw on some bright red patches on it. All near the underside which cant really be seen while in use but more so when upside down. Now it looks hippy like but i don’t care, as I always leave it on the water side and i don’t think anyone would be bothered to take it. I find this a great deterrent.
I have a 3.1m zodiac all singing all dancing that I never really use then which is pointless!!!

They sell letters or stencils (choose your design) and the paint.

I've used FunkyMonkey several times and they're excellent people to deal with. They made custom stick-on letters for my boat from an image I emailed them. They also supplied a stencil and paint for my Avon tender. When I cocked-up the first attempt they sent me out some new stencils free of charge. Very nice people.

On the subject of paint for inflatables, polymarine do both a vinyl paint and a hypalon paint, so be sure to get the correct paint for your dinghy. Hypalon is the more expensive material used on Avons and Zodiacs.

Also if painting letters on an inflatable through a stencil you have to work very quickly or when you remove the stencil the paint will peel away too. Best to do one letter at a time then peel back that part of the stencil. Fiddly but it works.
