Painting grp hull for first time

It might be an idea to have a wander round boatyards and look at boats that have painted hulls. Nice time of year to do it too. Might help you to come to a decision.

Personally , I have only owned boats that have gel coat showing. Until now.... The boat has a hand painted hull and I must admit this has come as a relief. No more messing about with buffers and cutters , black tyre marks etc.

Two of us could paint the hull ( 22') in an hour with little preparation. Season mishaps can just be touched up.

I think marinas are great but consciously or subconsciously they may possibly lead us into too much emphasis on
boat presentation because of so many close neighbours.

Red fades the most (look at any old Vauxhall Corsa) Green is the most fade resistant pigment.

The paint I used has not faded in 5 years. I touched up a couple of scratches recently with a new tin, and once dried you could see no difference.

Morello Red BTW. The bright reds I would agree do fade. Same with sprayhoods and dodgers. Scarlet fades, Burgundy seems to hold its colour better. Perhaps because of the blue in it?

Thanks all. Got hold of gel coat from the boat manufacturer, bodged and taped, sanded and cursed, then spent justness ver an hour with a polishing machine and farecla coarse cut 100. Looks a million times better already. 2 hrs and some Profile 200 and I'll be done. I'd say it's near perfect from 10 ft away.

dont use international as they change the colours too often & you will never get a match 5 yrs later  Use Awlgrip for a Pro job

I have used leyland trade gloss for years half the price of toplac and just as good.Use a 4"roller and jenny brush which is a foam brush with a vee shaped tip.Finnish is incredible.I have never used under coat, just lightly machine sand and clean with white spirit.

Aye, and when the hull is wet it withstands the binocular test!

I should know, poor Khamsin is horribly scratched (Crinan Canal 2013), but if I arrive in port after a lively sail, and leave before the pernickerty types are up, no-one notices!

It's perverse but I've admired and really liked many boats that if I owned, I'd be ashamed of. I get comments all the time about how nice the Kipper is, but I think her hull looks shabby and neglected. What's that about?

Absolutely no way! Ridiculous suggestion! Perfection 709, learn to use a roller and brush properly. 2 pack paints are infinitely better than gel anyway AND help fend off osmosis!
