Painting a boat

I agree with the Owatrol if you are not using two pack but there is so much preparation involved it seems a shame not to go the whole way. I have done both, Toplac and International two pack and Awlgrip a few years back, never on my own boat yet though. Applied with small roller and tipped off with either a foam brush or a really high quality 3-4" bristle, the latter is best. The quality of the job is down to preparation, conditions and good access, really worth hiring or borrowing loads of trestles and planks if you do not want anyone to spot a brush mark, continuity is essential and it is not a job that can be properly done from ladders. You apply lightly and never go back or tip off more than once, very lightly just enough to kill the bubbles from the roller. We did a Dutch built steel forty footer a couple of years back, after the first top coat it looked perfect, however the second top coat went on on a humid day and while the finish is smooth and clear, the gloss is just a wee bit down from the first coat but then we were working outdoors in Scotland.
