I am looking to touch up the rusty bits on my cherished 2GM. The Yanmar paint appears to cost an arm and a leg at north of 30 quid: https://www.frenchmarine.com/product/Yanmar-Paint-001-Silver-Metallic-Touch-Up-Paint-2492-732

I have wire brushed, degreased and rust converted the rusty bits now, and I read on here that Hammerite primer is a good base for the engine enamel so I'll get some of that to go over the rust converter (Hydrate 80). Has anyone got any experience with cheaper 'compatible' engine enamels, such as the below?

My gut is to take it on the chin and pay the £30 plus for the Yanmar stuff on the basis of the quality is remembered long after the cost is forgotten...? (not that I spend that long staring starry eyed at my engine...)

And how on earth do you spray these small patches in? Lots and lots of masking tape and plastic sheeting to avoid overspray? Is there anywhere I should avoid spraying? (around bolts and the like?)

Personally I would use Hammerite smooth finish, although not normally a great fan of Hammerite.

I would apply two good round coats by brush.

I use the Hammerite Smooth metal paint but the colour range in B & Q, which I think is the full Hammerite range, does not have a grey colour which seems very strange. I bought the nearest to grey which I think is called Wild Thyme (!) which looks quite Yanmar-ish on the tin but when applied is slightly greenish. Better than nothing though.

There is a new additional range of 26 colours available via the in-store Dulux colour mixing system : http://www.hammerite.co.uk/web/pdf/product_guide_2013.pdf

Very interesting.

I think the Misty Lake or Blue Slate look quite Yanmar-ish (assuming my PC monitor rendering is anything like real life!) but it doesn't look like they will actually match a colour as Mark is hoping, just make up the nearest within that range of 26.

Mark ..... it looks like you're going to be the guinea pig here. We will await your recommendation! :)

Having owned steel boat if you apply a rust converter its ony matter of time before rust comes back. To stop it coming back use zinc rich epoxy paint.

This is my experience too and I think it's because of a lack of adhesion. I found better results by wire brushing the first application of converter (Fertan) off then re-applying. It seemed to bring some more of the rust off, especially from pitted areas. Then apply a good primer.

When I painted my Perkins I took the heat exchanger cap to get a colour match in to a motor factors and bought a blue metallic
spray paint off the shelf, I am sure with all the silver metallic cars on the rd you will get an almost perfect match.

I ordered a whole pile of stuff (new thermostat, Rydlyme, new bolts for my exhaust elbow (!!) etc etc) from Frenchmarine, and after reading that petrol and diesel will actually eat away at Hammerite (and having this confirmed by Hammerite themselves):

Thank you for your email.

Hammerite will resist splashing by petrol and diesel when fully cured but will fail if immersed in petrol or diesel or they are left on the surface for a prolonged time.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help.

I thought, what the hey, and asked French Marine for Yanmar engine paint for my 2GM20. When the bill arrived (and all the goodies :encouragement:), I was surprised to see the paint cost less than a tenner, (not the close to £40 that Yanmar charge). They sent this stuff:

FrenchMarine are proper Yanmar jedis, so I trust their judgement, and am, as ever pleased with the epic service and for them not to have done the 'upsell' to me and given me the most expensive paint, but to sell me the most appropriate. Hats off to them. I'll let you know how the painting goes...
