I have a 1972 Fairey Super Swordsman on which I am embarking on a major restoration project, part of which is taking her back to bare wood and repainting. Does anyone have any advice or opinions on the best paints to use on a hot-moulded hull. I'd like to use something a bit more resilient than Yacht enamel because having used it in the past I find it's only good for 2 years at most before you're painting again. Is Toplac any good? What about 2-pack paints? I'm told by some that they are OK on hot-moulded because it's a stable form of timber construction, others say not to use them. Also, Are some paints better for certain areas than others, i.e. topsides, cabin sides/top, coamings?

What does the panel think?

Bill.

Theres a guy on here who has just done this job on a similar fairey. I would use two pack, perfection 709, I've used it on stable timber and it's excellent paint.

I forgot for a moment, it's burgundyben, with the fairey. He knows more about them than most on here.

Mine's GRP, not toplac, but I found BogStandard enamel lasted 2 years max., Toplac at least 5, 7+ if you are careful or don't have a berth that sits you in the mud. Definitely an improvement over the original enamel, I've not tried 2-packs to see if the application difficulties outweigh the longer repainting interval. Over to burgundyben?

Hi
use only the best "Awlgrip" (but not thr acrylic one) the shine is a "mile" deep & will out last all the other products on the market.
i have had 2 boat sprayed with it brilliant results !.

Thanks for the input all. I've been in touch with Ben he reckons take it all back to bare wood, epoxy up to the gunwale then a two-pack system, so that's what I'll most likely do. Don't think I'll use Awlgrip because I don't have spray gear and respirator. I think I'll go for International "Perfection" using a "roll & tip" method.

Best get sanding then...........................

I think I should be ok, as the two main colours will ber white and Mauritius Blue. They have done these colours for donkeys years and they sell a lot of them, so I think it's unlikely they'll drop them, but thanks for the warning anyway.

Just to be on the safe side, would you recommend another brand of two-pack that is roller/brush applicable and not too subject to range change?

Bill,

mostly ths thread is in line with what I said via email/pm

other things to consider, you can roller awlgrip, friend of mine has done it on a saily boat with bloody good results.

International perfection is bloody tough, lasted 7 years odd on the huntress but dont go for mauritius blue, its a horrid colour, for the blue I used blakes oxford, some people like Epiphanes 3108, but for longest lasting job avoid blue and paint the whole boat white like Pete foukes' own boat, Knight express, the white will last better cos it stays cooler in the sun.

<hr width=100% size=1>Sod the Healey - I think I'll buy an E-Type.
