Duck punt build went very well

except.....

I used tape and polyester on the outside seams of the boat

I painted undercoat onto the bottom

seemed fine in most places

then I put on a coat of gloss and it has peeled back in a series of small slits an inch long and 1mm wide to reveal the ply underneath

it seems fine where the glass tape is - but all the problem areas are where there was no tape and just a small skim of polyester over a screw hole or dent

what did I do wrong?

not enough time for a full cure before painting?

too damp in the garage?

wrong sort of paint?

what do I do now?

sand it back to roughen it up and paint again with the same stuff?

wipe it with acetone?

for undercoat I used this

http://www.ronseal.co.uk/products/kn...-and-undercoat

for topcoat I used

http://www.ronseal.co.uk/paint/gloss-paint

it all went wonderfully on the inside of the boat where I used epoxy for the joints and fillets

no problem between epoxy and the paint the only problem is over the ployester

When I built the Mirror Primed with International metallic primer and painted with International yacht enamel.... No probs.

When I built my little tender I did likewise but painted with Dulux ... no probs

Ronseal is not something I would have thought of using. Even if one of my favourite indoor varnishes ... at least until I bought some water based rubbish.
Dulux or Dulux would have been my choice! No reason to doubt the suitability of Ronseal though.

The link does not tell me what you under-coated with. The correct primer/undercoat for the top coat ?

Maybe the resin was not fully cured. It would take a while in a thin film at winter temperatures. Damp would not have helped either.

Put it somewhere warm... living room... for a few days, rub done and try again

bad combination

the ronseal worked well on the inside of the boat

but it was warmer when I painted it

it has cooled a bit since then

I have also seen that the mast I varnished has stayed a bit soft

so going to cover the boat with a tarp in the morning and put a convection heater underneath for an hour or so in the morning - see if that helps

makes the jan 1 first sail a bit of a longshot now

I was right on schedule
