I have a paddlewheel log on my boat. It is natural , ie not antifouled. However every time I leave the boat for say 2wks it needs cleaning before it works again. Lots of little wriggly things on it. The boat is kept in Plymouth. Do any other forumites have this problem ? I am thinking of removing it and very carefully antifouling it. Anybody else had success with this ?

I have a NASA paddlewheel log & anti fouled the rotor last year. Took a bit of time as I very carefully used Wet & Dry to give the paddles a key before painting (with a diddy little brush) Frankly I do not think it was worth the effort as it still gunged up after a few weeks & needed cleaning almost every time we went out. May have been the type of anti-foul, but at best I reckon its more trouble than it's worth. Just pull the log every time before you use it, it only takes a couple mins with a small nail brush.

Alternatively, try a quick blast of Sailkote or similar PTFE stuff - I picked this up as a tip on the forum and its worked so far for me this season.

Is the hull metal?

if it is, buy some neodynium magnets sow them around the edge of a bit of leather, like the bolts on portholes, round the edge and then reach down and place it over the hole, so stopping any unwanted beasties from getting in.

Solved!

I coat mine with anhydrous lanolin with good success. To do so, remove impellor and replace with blanking plug, then scrupulously clean. Next spary with the lanolin spray, and allow to dry off for a couple of hours. Repeat coating several times over a couple of days, then reinstall. I find mine goes from a max of a week or so working to being okay for a couple of months.

The instructions with our new paddle wheel say very definitely that it should be antifouled and so I did so with an artist's brush and boot topping. Result? It has fouled up just as fast as did our old one which I never painted.
