Following on from the ST60 transducer question can I conduct a little poll, personally I always replace the paddle wheel with the plug after a sail but what do others do?

I've now got the hang of removing the paddlewheel after each trip without shipping a lot of water. Medway fouling would render the paddlewheel useless if left overnight

I try and remove mine every time I am leaving the boat for more than a couple of days. If I don't the little beasties take up residence and clog up the works.

With practice, and a unit that has a flap valve, barely a cup full comes in each time.

If we are on a trip of a week or more I don't take it out. After 4 weeks in Holland this year it was still clean at the end. Seems no need to bother if the boat is moving most days.

Yes, I remove paddle wheel and replace cap when leaving boat.

Always remove mine if leaving more than a couple of days. Glued a rubber drain pipe connector to floor around transducer to catch the water and then use a turkey baster to remove it.

Used a rubber connector as it was easy to carve to fit.

I always forget and then spend the first half hour of my next trip, the motor up the Hamble, staring expectantly at the log waiting for the paddle wheel to free itself. Then follows the ritual of passing over the helm to my wife whilst I go below, returning a few minutes later wet and saying 'I must start removing the log at the end of a trip', only to do it all over again next time out.

thanks guys - I knew there was one thing I forgot when we left the boat yesterday.

Yes, I do try to remove the paddle wheel transducer at the end of current use - we are lucky its in a well so the ingress is contained and only takes a few mins to mop up. Incidentally, I use an old tooth brush to clean the paddle wheel if it has any fouling.

Agree re toothbrush, I keep one handy.

Another tip if you do forget and get fouled up, fill a small container with fresh water and dunk the head in that for a minute or so before starting to clean. It seems to make the little crawlies let go, then can be quite tenacious otherwise.

Mine is not fitted with a flap so I take in quite a lot of water when I clear mine, hence only done when it stops working.
