There are indeed strict rules about redundancy. But from what I can tell the existing crews have been sacked, not made redundant. I think it's quite likely the ships will have been transferred to foreign registry and may no longer be subject to UK laws.

The ships are under the Cypriot flag. P&O deflagged from UK in response to Brexit impact on tonnage tax laws.

And IIRC the redundancy rules include a minimum consultation period between the announcement and people actually being given their redundancy notice - and that doesn't seem to have happened here.

If I remember rightly, if you make a position redundant, you are not allowed to re-fill that position within 6 months. However, I suspect that using agency staff is a way around that problem.

After ******** P & O re-registered the boats in Cyprus in 2019 hence they are not covered by UK employment laws.

Interestingly if you Google reasons for reflagging the P & O boats high on the list is a ybw forum thread dated 2019. Then a place of informative comment.

It doesn't have to be. P&O seafarers are employed by P&O Ferries (Jersey) Ltd on a so-called ‘offshore contract’, governed by the employment law of one of Europe’s few remaining semi-feudal bailiwicks.
Seafarer employment law is the last real Wild West.
