Could someone tell me the percentage to mix the Oxalic Acid (crystal form) with water? I will try to remove the moss that has been built up on my boat's stern waterline (Yamaha 26) while I do the anti-fouling next week.

And, what kind of thing can I put on the propeller to protect it? (I know the antifoul is not the proper material.)

Thanks for any reply in advance!!!

Don't forget to put a pair of gloves on.

Try some International MPX on the prop (possibly called trilux now)

Have a looks at the international website

I cant advise you but I can tell you what I do, which is to mix a teaspoon of the crystals in about a mug of water. However, I use it for removing iron oxide stains (the brown round the water line) . Do not know whether it would work on moss. In fact, I suspect it would be no better than a cream cleaner and a brush, if as good.

I have never bothered to protect the prop and had no problems, but I have never left the prop in contact for long.

It is poisonous so dont lick your fingers. It is corrosive, so wear gloves and eye protection. Dont pollute the watercourse!

Re: the prop

I found no difference in fouling between antifouling (Micron or Tiger) and just polishing. I have a bronze prop. Obviously an aly or plastic one (as usually found on outboards) would be better antifouled. Other fouling regimes may be different, and it would probably vary depending on how many miles you do under power.

Re: the prop

How about "Black Lead" on the props I have seen it mentioned by others as the way to go?

Your questions answered

I copied this from a site that I no longer have the url for, this is what it said....

Oxalic acid, "wood bleach", is used to remove stains and lighten darkened gray weathered wood. A solution (four ounces per gallon of water ) of oxalic acid crystals dissolved in water should be applied to the discolored area. Stains will fade and disappear in twenty minutes or less following this application.

Oxalic acid is also used in commercial rust removers to remove iron rust; a weak solution will remove rust stains from tubs and sinks. Another use for Oxalic acid is in the finishing of marble commercially as a marble polish.

Caution: Oxalic acid is poisonous but not dangerous if precautions are taken. Wear rubber gloves and be careful not to let the acid or solution touch your skin or eyes. Wear old clothes. Try not to spill any on plants. When you have finished, wash containers, clothes and brushes thoroughly. .

Oxalic acid, "wood bleach", is used to remove stains and lighten darkened gray weathered wood after a through cleaning. A solution (four ounces per gallon of water ) of oxalic acid crystals dissolved in water should be applied to the discolored area. Stains will fade and disappear in twenty minutes or less following this application. On new pressure treated lumber a treatment of Oxalic acid will open up the mill glaze and allow you to seal or stain the wood.

The Cleaning Process: 1.) Remove any loose soil or dirt.
2.)Wet the deck with water.
3.)Pre-treat oil and grease stains with TSP (tri sodium phosphate) or some other degreaser.
Add 6-8 ounces of Wood Renew in a gallon of hot water. Allow to sit for 5 minutes for the powder to dissolve and become active.
Apply the deck cleaning solution with a pump-up garden sprayer, paint roller, mop or deck cleaning brush.
Wait 15 to 20 minutes after application then scrub with stiff bristle brush on a pole or a push broom.
Use a garden hose to rinse away the dirt and grime. Repeat as necessary, especially for really worn or stained decks.

I think this is better than Oxalic Acid

Oxygen bleach
( sodium percarbonate )

Sodium percarbonate is an excellent detergent and bleaching agent based on hydrogen peroxide. It is a good cleaning and bleaching agent at normal temperature, and has strong fungicide effect. Fruits and vegetables treated with sodium percarbonate can be kept fresh, and be stored for a long time. In medicine, it can kill staphy lococcus, and colon bacillus .

This product is a white particle powder, non-toxic no contamination, non-flammable, non-explosive, easy to get damp, and soluble in water.

Oxygen bleach is excellent for cleaning and removing organic stains (such as coffee, tea, wine, fruit juices, foods, sauces, grass and blood) from fabrics, plastics, fiberglass, porcelain, ceramics, wood, carpets, asphalt, concrete, etc. Oxygen bleach can be used in any place in or around the house that need to be destained and deodorized; it is efficient, safe and economical.
It is non-toxic, environmentally safe, biodegradable, and leaves no harmful by-products or residues which can harm the environment
In the Wash: Due to the high cost of energy in many parts of the world, wash temperatures in the range 20 to 40°C are now common, with cycle times as short as 15 minutes.
In addition, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the need for good hygiene at the new low temperature detergents.
At low temperatures where there is no thermal disinfection, sodium percarbonate provides an additional boost to provide bleach activation at low temperatures and disinfecting.
I am sure a lot of you have seen TV infomercials where they demonstrate their miracle "Oxy this" and "Oxi that" removing horrible stains from fabrics, walls, tile etc. Guess what...Its nothing more than sodium percarbonate AND about 40% by volume of fillers like inert soda ash, chalk, even saw dust!!. In other words, 40% of the money you are spending is buying dust!

Benefits
• No environmental hazards - breaks down to oxygen, water and sodium carbonate (soda ash) in your wash water.
• Color safe and fabric safe. It brightens colors
• Continual use will not cause yellowing or graying of cotton fabric
• Effective stain removal in a broad range of water temperatures
• Lengthens time between linen replacement
• Prevents fabric from becoming yellowed or darkened
• Does not weaken the strength of fabrics like chlorine bleach
• In the laundry Sodium Percarbonate is used to destain, deodorize, and whiten. It is very effective as a laundry presoak for heavily stained articles.
Mixing Solutions Of Sodium Percarbonate
Sodium Percabonate solutions will remain active for 5 to 6 hours, after which they should be discarded. Unused material may be poured down the drain. It will actually help clean and deodorize your disposal or toilet.
Sodium percarbonate solutions are most effective when mixed and used in warm to hot solutions (100 to 150 F).

General Cleaning: Mix 4 fl oz of percarbonate in a gallon of warm or hot water. (1 fl oz per quart).
Heavy Cleaning: Mix 8 fl oz of Percarbonate in a gallon of warm or hot water. (2 fl oz per qaurt)
Soaks: Mix 2 to 8 fl oz Percarbonate in a gallon of hot water.

Oxalic Acid - 25 grams to 500ccs of water. You can make it stronger but repeated dosage in heavily soiled places is proably better.
