So, due to the weather I chickened out of going up the East Coast and came up the Thames instead, so have spent the last couple of days plodding up river.
What I cant undertand is the need to overtake before reaching the next lock, yesterday was a classic example, we were first out of Penton Hook and plodding along at 5mph with 2 cruisers behind us. Stayed that way until Staines Bridge then all of a sudden they just had to overtake so as to get to the next lock before us. Now if Bell Weir was tiny then I could possibly understand it but its about the same size!
I took the right hand arch and let the first one pass me through the centre arch and the second one passed me in the narrows above the bridge right at the end of a certain forumites garden. Why they didnt do it before where the river was wide I just do not know.
Oh and at Bell Weir lock the asst lock keeper called me by name completely confused me as I havent a clue who he was /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Moored at Cliveden and off to Reading tomorrow.

It baffles me. Last weekend someone tried to pass us on the approach to PH lock... how rude! But I don't let it bother me.

I noticed a number of boats passing going upstream yesterday and assume you were part of that group (on the inside). I am relaxed about passing when you are being slow (and I often am) but sometimes manners seem to be forgotten...

Well if they dont manage to get past you on the river they will just push in when you are going into the lock /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I had three boats overtake me as i was waiting to cast off into Molesey lock today . The race to get out of the lock is no better . I have noticed over the last few years that people are not waiting their turn and will go around other boats in the lock to get out . These are not hire boats either !

Well last week I was overtaken by some miserable twerp sitting on top of his large Sealine from Bray (Name withheld for now) about 200 yards from Bray lock going downstream! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

The arrogance of some boaters this year and the miserable faces on some of them makes you wonder why they bother boating at all.
Still got in the lock as the lockeeper managed to squeeze me in behind his boat. Made him panic as we came in very close to his tub. Result!!

They don't like it when you lob your Anchor onto their bathing platform either.... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't mind being overtaken on the way out of a lock at all, and will throttle back to facilitate a swift manoevre, but on the way in is just a jolly poor show.

The wake on a few of Sundays vessels was quite astonishing too! I may have seen that Sealine.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

we'll compare notes and see if there is a match /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Was trying to get my bow underneath his nice tender and cut the ropes /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Agree about the overtaking issues, especially when I know I am already pushing my luck slightly speedwise (my boat makes very little wash though..) and they still come creaming past me. A Humber 40 was really hammering down through Cookham late on Sunday and rocked the whole mooring line.

As for twerps sitting on top, at least yours was on a flying bridge. Saw one over the weekend sitting on top of the sunroof of a b*rchw**d XX steering thru the roof with his feet.....wonder who that was..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thats quite allowable, as our little cockpits get very hot /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The downside of all that weather protection is a distinct lack of visibility or weather protection, so we have a very low rent flybridge, AKA 'A roof' /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyway, you will have noticed the speed limit being adhered to, and the almost total lack of wake /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Used to do that quite often when I had a B25, couldn't quite get it set up so I could reach the throttle though - poor robos

Oh sorry, you were talking about the engine.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Yes that was me big black and blue thing!
I dont mind people overtaking its just that they do in such idiot places, not where its wide and they can see.
There was another one today passed us just before the bend below Sonning bridge he must have been able to see round it cos he knew there was nothing coming.

Cant make Windsor I'm afraid, already have previous commitments.

Ah the days when locking was such good fun. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Overtaking on dodgy parts of the river and near locks should be capital offences!

It looks like forum silence is the order of the day now when it comes to Birchwood jibes /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
