. "Why risk hitting the boats behind?" I don't think I am risking it, cos the clutch is ok. On the contrary, I'd say why take away the benefit of hearing the chain if it starts grinding on the roller, cos that's a handy wake up call that the sea/wind just got a bit dodgy. I can also weigh anchor much faster in an emergency, sans snubber. Just imho!
