Overcharging?

The alternator on my Volvo Penta 2002 MAY be overcharging? When I start the engine the voltage output is 15.6V (which is too much) but over the next 5 - 10 mins it drops to a more normal 14v to 14.5V and then all is fine no matter how long I run the engine. If later on in the day I start the engine again, again the initial voltage may be 15.6V which then drops to normal over 5 - 10 mins and then all ok again. Note sometimes its actually ok from start!

Ive tried cleaning connections etc but to now avail. Its almost as if the alternator somehow 'sticks' at the higher voltage until something (dont know what) happens and it goes ah better do it right now!

Is the alternator knackered or does anyone have any other ideas?

Is there a voltage regulator that needs fixed/replaced?

You dont say how you measured the voltage but check it with a known good meter

If the alternator is battery sensed check the sensing connection but if it's just the bog standard alternator it's machine sensed

Suspect the regulator. Get the alternator checked and fixed if necessary by an automobile electrician.
