Hi.

I´m a Swedish sailer planning to sail to Scotland and Ireland this summer. My boat is nine (9) meters long and tree (3) meters wide and I´m now looking for a place to berth it from September (2007) to April/May (2008). Anyone knowing of a good, but not to expensive place (€990 for Oct - March is the best so fare), to leave my boat during this period? I have intentions to come to Scotland/Ireland several times during the winter and hope it´s possible to live on my boat during my visits. Because of this I need electricity also during the winter and access to water. Showers would also be nice to have access to, as well as Internet.

Best regards
/Ralph

Ralph, the two best marinas in my opinion, that I have been in on the east coast of Ireland are Bangor on Belafast Lough and Dun Laoghaire on Dublin Bay. Both are 5 Star and both are less than an hour to the nearest airport if you intend flying in and out. The only drawback is they may be expensive, but then what do you consider expensive? If you do a Google search you should get info on them.
Others on the east coast are Ardglass in County Down, Carlingford in County Louth, Malahide in County Dublin, Howth County Dublin, Arklow County Wicklow. There are many more in Ireland but these are the ones I have been in.

Troon Yacht Haven 10~15mins from Prestwick Airport.

I admit I am curious where one can get a marina berth for a 9metre boat €990 for 6 months in Scotland or Ireland for that matter.

I left my boat in Crosshaven near Cork, the facilities are good and only 20 mins from Cork Airport. Two marinas and two boatyards with all facilities.

When you come over, come in to Peterhead as your first stop. It is a very convenient stop when you have just come over the North Sea. You could leave your boat there for the winter, but I don't know what the cost would be. You could stay on board when you come. There is electricity and water on the pontoons and also showers.

I pay £580 for 12 months berthing for my 8metre yacht, but I know they do a 6months winter rate.

Aberdeen airport is about 45 minutes away, and there are flights to Norway, but I'm not sure about Sweden.

If you do come to Peterhead, let me know when you think you will arrive and I'll look out for you.

Hi,

I believe Waterford City Marina is very good value for the winter. I have heard around €300, but cannot vouch for that price. Probably no internet but plenty of wifi and internet cafes nearby. Electricity available. Also advantages of being in the middle of a city with a regional airport nearby.

Kilmore Quay is also good value but a lot more expensive than Waterford.

Cheers,

Nigel.

Fahan Marina - Lough Swilly, Donegal, Ireland.
Facilities are not great, but there is electricity and water.
It would probably be cheaper than 1000 Euros.
Close to City of Derry airport where you can fly to Stansted.

Without a doubt I would leave it at Troon. Regular low cost Ryanair flights to Sweden from Prestwick Airport a 5 minute taxi ride away.

P.S.

Ralph......I am Troon based and also own an Albin, albeit a Cirrus. 2 years back sailed from Sweden back to Troon in 6 days aboard friends brand new Najad 373. Najad factory to Mandal for beer stop. Crossed North sea to Buckie for fuel then night stop Inverness. Next day Caledonian canal to Fort Agustus, night stop then through canal to Colonsay. Next day to Sanda night stop then home to Troon, a great fast passage in NE F6 winds in early May.

If you make it to Troon look me up for a beer, I spend most of my life there!!!

Paul.

Not as good as it sounds Nigel, no showers, toilets, pontoon maintenance, berthing supervision or security, lot of probs with vandalism (boats sunk), sad situation, but not a cheap option, I live aboard but would not be happy leaving the boat unattended. Will be back to the Continent come Spring.
