I noticed at SIBS many new (ie just launched) models had 'designer' cleats for mooring.

Some were 'S' shaped, others straight with uppy turny ends some with down turny ends.

What is the point? I like these things straight and functual - nothing wrong either with a couple of bollards!

I notice too that length for length the price rise on new model boats is huge......to pay for this over design?

Whilst in print - how can builders justify the double price rise we appear to get each year......each boat show adds 3/5%.

Stupid idea and dangerous to boot

Noticed on a couple of the boats( Fairline ?)we saw that some of the cleats were almost pointy at the ends. With enough force instead of a bruise someone is gonna end up impaled.Seem to recall that on the stern quarters two were nearly verticle.Easy to slide down and ouch.

Agree with you. Saw cleats on a Cranchi with sharp enough ends to take your eye out. Stubbing your toe on one of those would make your eyes water. Vertical cleats not a good idea generally as much easier to pull out than horizontal ones

A longer boat is much bigger in volume and that is the real influence on cost but I agree with you in that new boat prices always seem to outstrip inflation but ever increasing prices is good for maintaining prices of secondhand boats that sensible people buy
