Need to replace our oven - what do folk recommend

we need:

2 burners
grill
decent oven with temp control and thermostat etc.
ideally doesn't need matches

any recommendations?

Nelson Spinflo

A brilliant oven, been using ours for 5 years, cook everything from full roasts to bread...

It is just excellent. No doubt a doomsayer will tell me you get just a good from the cheaper ovens, the spinflo is a bit more expensive that the plastimos.. well, the simple answer is, you don't.

Nelson Spinflo and Plastimo Neptune usually come out top in tests at the lower end. Not sure paying more gets a better cooker, unless of course you want a proper Taylors paraffin!. Not much to choose between them, although plastimo is often a bit cheaper. Both UK made if that helps!

Our ENO is good on the top burners, easy to clean the top surfaces and clamps robust.
However, the legends on the front wipe of with a rag so you dont what is on or off,
the grill takes 5 minutes to warm up and is not a spectacular performer,
the oven has always been difficult to light, even though I have adjusted the thermocouple, and the access hole to get a taper in is all wrong.
The oven door open tilts the whole cooker forward on the gimbals which tips out the contents of the oven/grill.

All in all , I cannot recommend an ENO product.
Our Flavel Vanessa was much better made and performed much better.

I bought a Plastimo because it was a drop-in replacement for the one that died the day afyer I bought the boat (also a Plastimo). When the gas fitter was connecting it with new pipes I told that the roof had rusted out on the old one -"That always happens with Plastimos" /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif What really annoys me with it is the flimsy bit of bent wire that goes across the front of the oven as a safety catch, It is just poked in holes either side and often comes adrift. Grr /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Other than that it works fine.

We have a Nelson Spinflo and very pleased with it, often comes out well on tests as does the Plastimo which is a bit cheaper. We bought ours new on ebay at a very good price and there are often good ones one ebay so check frequently if you are after a secondhand one. Just checked, there is a new Plastimo at £375 and a new Spinflo at £475 on a Buy it Now basis. Both need matches/gas lighter though...... I see you are in Ipswich - haggle with Foxes and you can often get a good deal!

Although Mr Fullcircle has slated his ENO I had first hand experience of its performance on Sat evening aboard Fullcircle when it produce 3 Fray bentos pies in one go so its not all bad /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I have an eno gascoyne, which has been my best buy for the boat up to now, got it off ebay from a yacht dealer, brand new £300, as it was replaced with a cooker with a grill, the burners are excellent, just as good as the ones on the home cooker, and the oven has transformed our cooking habits, fb pies, oven chips, roasts. we make sure that the gimbals are locked before we open the oven, and havent tried to open with the gimbals swinging, will try today when i go to the boat, we have got a big chunk of concrete type weight bolted to rear of oven, which is an anti tip device, but haven't used it in anger yet..

I found that it has an excellent piezo starter for oven and burners, which all work well, and the curved gas burner under oven, gives excellent heat in oven, although not thermosatically controlled, like plastimo and some of the others, we have just fitted a oven thermometer which is viewable through the glass door...

The new chandlery price looks steep, but it is a well built unit compared to the plastimo, if a second choice was needed i would go for the nelson spinflo..

We have a Neptune 2000 and in particular the oven is excellent, Mrs Maxi swears by where as she swears at the Smev (which I admit is a budget one) which is installed in our caravan.

our plastimo has served us well until last year when the oven door handle broke, just the plastic spacer at the end.

phoned the spares agents who say only the door seal and a complete door is available /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Steve,
I suspect you'll have to dismantle the door to fix the handle. I took ours apart over the winter to clean the glass.
The inside of the door is pop riveted to the hinge. So to dismantle you have to remove the surround with the door in place. This is best done at home with the cooker on its back rather than hanging in gimbals on the boat. In fact it HAS to be on its back to reassemble.

What is your current oven? I do know that both the Nelson Spinflo and Neptune 2500 are direct replacements for the Flavel Vanessa- ie should drop straight in without adjustment.

Some months ago on this forum, there was an outlet, I think in Fareham, that was selling the Spinflo Nelson for £400. Wish I had been able to take advantage then & don't know if the offer still stands.

You must be able to make something up!? Try a kitchen shop.
I have a cast iron casserole at home. The knob on the lid failed the first time I used it. Replaced it with a brass cupboard knob. Been fine for the last ten years.
