just daydreaming, looking at going faster in a smaller boat, but anything targa like under @ 40ft seems to have outdrives. In the unlikely event I went for a boat with outdrives which model of outdrive is the most durable/reliable and what does it typically cost to have them refurbished with new seals, clutches etc (assuming no water ingress)

or is there a sub 40ft targa style boat on shafts?

We have a single VP DPE and do the servicing ourselves.

Typical annual cost to replace the bellows, anodes, oil seals and oil is in the region of £300 DIY using genuine bellows.

We had to replace a bearing and shaft a couple of seasons back and the shaft was £700 with the bearing being about £50 from memory.

We bought new duo props at the beginning of this year at £450.

Obviously these costs would be doubled for a twin installation.

Riva Bravo 38!

Sorry forgot Riva -yup now classic and cool in the Med
+ tropicanna 43. Although a 43 its got a narrow beam +fine entry + 15L cummins .
Age - don,t be put off .Many have been meticulously maintained -up dated etc ,

Btw what does the OP mean by "going faster " ?
Where are you now cruise speed wise with your F B sealine ?

i tend to cruise at @ 23 -24 knts. I was thinking about travelling around 30Knts plus. The T50 will do 30Knts but thats max power all the time. The Pershings are lovely. I was also looking on interweb at big RIBs with twin outboards, but they lack the domestic essentials MrsA would insist up (a loo and shower)

I had the lower unit rebuilt on my volvo dph drive a couple of years ago and it cost about £3k.

Regular service is about £700 per annum.

I've found over the years the quotes for getting them serviced ranged from pleasantly surprised to gobsmacked. needless to say I've always gone with the pleasantly surprised.

Mine are 14 year old DP 290e 1200 hours. Oil and below change every two years generally DIY @ around £350 all in the pair plus anodes at say £50 a leg, including the extra mushroom anodes on each leg.

About four years ago I had the legs taken away and serviced including new seals @ £350 a side plus anodes. I had the seals changed just as a precaution.

If you buy Ali props you can expect them to last maybe up to four years @ around £450 a side, I've got stainless which are 8 years old and still look like new @ around £1500 a side but you can get patterns for around £1000.

One of the beauty of legs is two weeks ago I took the props off and cleaned the nasty warm off which is currently running riot in Chichester marina, changed the ring anodes and all without a lift or getting wet, just hanging over the bathing platform.

30 knots cruise is what i do -plenty fast - to date no FB has ever passed me -

Something with Trimax surface drives will give cruise @40 knots but sea state permitting .
Start looking @ deadrise of your prospectives -it's important to be able to keep going when it cuts up rough ,mines 23 ,the Itama 38 are 22
Anything around 20+ really to be able to excercise that speed in the real world
Trimax SD,s have no rams or rubber in the water like Arnesons and out drives .
S/skr -did some superhawks smaller 40
They do a triple 50 too , agian moving in the wrong direction maintenance wise 3x compared to 2x

Pershing ,Itama , 30 knot cruise -Riva,s Kinda ok ish but not really 30 knoters ,
All of above more likely Med spec ( Geny ,Airco , Passerelle ) .
SHawk + trimax - faster but unlikely to be Med speced
Hunton -where do you fit the Paserelle ? And other Med spec stuff , only 5000 kg,s
