Hi Could anybody tell me what model this outboard is with approximate age and could i convert it to remotes from tiller many thanks its a yamaha 15hp 2 stroke long shaft

Typically there is a sticky label on the cylinder head inside the shroud.


That gives you the Model number and Serial number, from which you can glean the date of manufacture, plus parts list and manual on the web.

thank you for the reply ive had a look over it but cant find an id plate there are a couple of rivets where it might have lived but it has gone just wondered if anyone had any ideas

Should be possible to convert although it will probably need to be a one-off custom job and you will also probably need separate gear and throttle controls as making it work with a single lever would be problematic. First job is to get onto the gear lever and find a way of connecting a cable. Then sort out the throttle which should be easier. Take photos of the internal connections for the gear and throttle and you will likely get good ideas on how to do it from here.

It looks very similar to my Yamaha 15 from about 1980. There should be a hole in the center of the front handle with two opposing cutouts to take a steering connector that you insert and turn 90deg to lock in. There is also a similar hole in the gear lever. The throttle connection is a bit more complicated with several cranks and linkages.
I have Yamaha service manual with pictures of all the parts but I doubt they are still available. I could scan and send the relevant pages and you might be lucky at a boat jumble.
The serial number plate should be on the left side of the transom clamp.

The 9.9 and 15 are the same beast with the power restricted for inland waterways in Europe.

My outboard is a model 684 so it would fit mine but without a serial number plate I can not be sure it would fit yours.

It looks like a mid 80’s model or maybe just before or after. The older ones had a chrome badge of HP. Is it Defo a 15 ? The 20 and 25 look similar.
You can convert to remotes. There is a hole and slot on the front handle there for steering and a similar one on the gear shift handle for the gear shit. The throttle will have a compatible set up too. Once set up it’s a fairly untidy looking affair, but functional.

Why's that? The engine doesn't know what's at the other end of the teleflexes.

As others have said, this engine was designed to have a remote option - the connection point for the steering is visible on the front "handle". Just a case of finding a set of the bits, which admittedly could be tricky. Might have to come with a dead engine attached to them.

The tiller does look very similar to the 1981 40hp Suzuki I used to have, so parts for that might possibly do the job, either with or without some adaptation.
