I'm a complete novice. I have a SIB with 6hp mercury. I'm just wondering how to make sure the outboard is in the correct position. There are 3 positions available. I'm not totally convinced it's in the right position. I was on it with 2 people (rating is 5) and it seems sluggish a chap with a 6hp fibreglass boat literally powered past me. I've had the outboard serviced. When it's just me it does move but the bow is almost at 45 degrees. Any help or advice on setting it up properly will be appreciated.
It's a 3m SIB with 6hp 2 stroke 2001 mercury.
Thanks

There should be a plate on the transom giving the rating and other details. Can you post a pic please ?

Three factors will control the angle the boat adopts when moving:

1 the weight and position of the passengers within the boat
2 the position of the prop in relation to the bottom of the transom
3 the angle of the o/b leg.

First check will be to see that the prop is OK relative to the transom. The cavitation plate should be level-ish with the lower edge of the transom to make sure the prop is in the water flow. Too deep and the prop will try to lever the front of the boat out of the water. Too shallow and the prop cannot work properly.

Then the angle of the leg. If you have it trimmed OUT (away from the transom) you make more 'bow upwards' leverage, so try adjusting it inwards towards the transom. Not all transoms are vertical BTW.

Then passenger mass. 5 persons on a 3m RIB and a 6hp o/b is not a recipe for speed. TBH you will be lucky to get on the plane with a 6hp on your own.

Vary the variables and see what happens. Frinstance, you may need a tiller extension when solo, to move the passenger mass forward.

This is all explained in the owners manual.

If you have mislaid your copy I think this is the one which covers your engine. http://download.brunswick-marine.com/filereader/file/pdf/4/enen/outboard/2001/2-stroke/10104z10.pdf

We have a 3.1 airdeck SIB and a 5hp 2t Tohatsu.

I can get it to plane fairly easily with me a small amount of luggage aboard say 16 stone maximum BUT I need to be sat forward which requires a tiller extension. Sitting in the normal position and opening the throttle just results in a Himalayan style wake being dragged behind and zero visibility!

We've got a 3.1M SIB, and did have a 5hp outboard till it got nicked! Could nearly get it up on the plane with just me in it. We now have a 6hp one which I haven't tried much yet.
I didn't think too much about the angle of the outboard - just make sure it's in the fully "down" position, not the "shallow water" position.
