Outboard engine oil, 4 stroke

I’ve got a Yamaha f60, about 3 yrs old. Do I need oil specified for outboards, or can I use 10W 40 from my local engine oil supplier? Is there anything special about Yamalube oil?

Afaik yamalube is synthetic. I have seen it positively recommended by us mechanics online for the f70 which is your engine but 4valves and 6400 rpm ish, but decent 10-40 should be fine in f60 and most other models esp as it probably gets changed at <100 hrs. (My 6 yr old f70 has 103 hours and 3 oil changes at least)

Thanks John, I believe it’s either synthetic or semi. I’ll be doing an oil change in September when I’m next back in Spain.

Agreed, that’s why I asked the question. I have always used Shell oils and have ordered it online, 5l for about £30 as opposed to the Yamalube at about £40 for 4l. Not a huge difference in the overall scheme of things, but my preference is for the Shell product.

I think you shouldn’t use marine specific oil. It has all sorts of inhibitors and goodness designed for marine use.
