As my outboard lives in the well I really need to antifoul it and try to prevent the home it provides the barnicles. I have been told of Trilux, but it came with a mixed experience and as such hasn't left me too clear as whether it will do the job and worth the time/trouble. Are there any other antifoulings for outboards on the market, and what experience has anyone had of them.

Any antifouling for aluminium is the choice, I use trilux for mine on the dinghy, it lives in the water, for at least six months. The fouling is minimal.

Hi

I also have an outboard in a well and dont antifoul the leg or prop. What I do if i know i will not be using the boat for a week or so is lift the engine out of the well put the leg inside a heavy plastic bag and drop it back into the well. Apart from this giving the leg a scrub every month or so stops any build up of fouling. Have been doing this for the last few seasons and the engine still looks like new.

Regards

Andrew

Hi I used Trilux on my outboard leg this season. Boat has been in the water for 1.5 months so far with no evidence of fouling. Boat is on the East Coast.

Trilux is International's product. Other A/F manufacturers will also do an A/F suitable for use on aluminium. Try looking for Blakess website and any other manufacturers you can think of. At the end of the day you will only need a small amount so you might as well use what your local Chandler sells. Hopefully he will stock what has locally been found to be effective but ask around to find out what others in the same area use. The A/F for aluminium has to be copper free.

Barnacles, in my experience, are not deterred by current A/F ( TBT seemed to keep them at bay). You may find it necessary to give it a mid-season scrub when the babies have attached themselves and before they start to grow. Keeping them out out of the intake and pump will something to concentrate on ie in areas you cannot apply A/F

I have an outboard in a well that I cant take out easily as the prop is too big to pass through the opening

I dont antifoul the leg, but did the prop with 'VC Prop-O-Drev'
Quite expensive at £ 17.96 for a 1.5m2 coverage spray can from Compass (and I did buy the proper primer as well) but have enough to respray each year for a few seasons.

much much less barnacles with this stuff on, and once or twice a year, when its a bit sunny i just hop in the water and any that are there I can easily scrape of with my fingers in 5 mins (I think its got teflon in it).

Didnt have any probs with the paint coming off.

I am on German N Sea coast, similar to East UK coast.

[/ QUOTE ] but rather different to the Helford River and its creeks in Cornwall which is where Johnathan Kent is based. Much of it is just like the background in his avatar, densely tree covered banks coupled with relatively warm water giving a high fouling potential. Smashing area though.
