Outboard 2 stroke oil

Hey all.
So I am getting some new 2 stoke oil and wanted to know if there are any preferred brands as there is a lot of choice and a lot of different prices. Does it matter too much what brand you use and does anyone recoment a particular brand to use for an older johnson outboard?

For any 2 stroke outboard smaller than about 70 hp any oil with a NMMA TC-W3 certification will be suitable.
Quicksilver is probably the most readily available brand in the UK The "Premium" grade will be adequate for a small engine

Dont forget you also need an outboard gear oil for the gearcase.

Ok great. I will have a look. I have recently done the gearbox oil so dont need to do that.

Quicksilver oil which is for outboards is about the same price if not less money than the Halfords oil.
The Halfords oil is for motorbikes.
I think an outboard engine runs cooler than a motorbike so the oil may be different?

I did not think Halfords sold any oil to TC-W3 specification .
The only 2 stroke oils I can see on their website are for motorcycles and garden machinery both having air cooled engines

You might save a little by using a non-marine oil.
But the TCW3 stuff is available from respected brands like Motul for about a tenner a litre.
I'm fairly sure there are a lot of bottles of oil out there with the same stuff in them as 'TCW3' it's mostly that to get that 'ticket' the oil is put through a bunch of expensive tests, the cost of which is recouped by a premium price on the 'marine' bottles.
It may kill a few less dolphins than using sump oil.
It's probably a better bet than something that's only any good for Chinese strimmers running at 25:1.

When you've got a 40HP 2T outboard, you can get through a few quids worth of 2T oil, but it's the 50 litres of petrol that costs the money.

A quick google seach indicates the correct grade of oil is not expensive in fact cheaper than motorcycle oil

Air cooled and water cooled 2-strokes run at different temperatures and different load cycles, and thus do NOT use the same oil. The additives, ash levels, and base oil are different.

I used to have regular forays into ports of West Africa, the aged outboards on the dugout canoes were fuelled by a mix of petrol and whatever oil they could get their hands on. Not really being up on the accurate dating of outboards, they all seemed to be of "certain age" and still surviving.

Indeed, when we were young lads with 2 stroke powered motabiity we also mixed with ordinary engine oil, that being much cheaper than 2T.

Just wondering if this a oil manufactures hype?
