Osmosis Repair

I exchanged contracts to buy a boat subject to survey. The surveyor found osmosis and said this was a 'do it now' matter rather than put it off. I have the option of pulling out, and just losing the surveyors fees, or renegotiaiting. The brokers take the view (its their job) that if the work is done, I am getting a better boat than I expected, so really I should not expect the price reducution to be as great as the costs.
Other worrying point is that the surveyor advises that during the treatment it may be that it will be clear some additional work should be done.
What should I do and does anybody have recomendations for Osmosis treatment in the Solent area?

I have one quibble with the answer given here .......

It is common that despite Trading Standards etc. that clearly state that a seller / Broker should sell merchantable good and declare such as Osmosis ...... it is still treated like a private sale in the way that disclosures are NOT made !

So Broker and seller will not be so afraid of losing the sale as said here.

As to your contribution ..... that depends on how much you like the boat and how much the price equates to general market ..... but then again asking prices are overstated anyway.

As regards 'further repairs' ..... that is inevitabel with all boats when under repair ..... even new boats can suffer increased repair lists when put under the scrutiny !!!! It is YOU that decides what, where and how much is done ...... Many items can be ignored, many items are less important than they may seem ..... just look at it calmly, weigh up pros' and cons - comparisons of other boats looked at etc. etc.

As to where to get the work done ..... most places offer similar warranties - average is 5 years on osmosis work. I like Hayling Yacht Co. on Hayling Island, but have no connection other than berthing there ... you can try via Adrain White Marine Services who works with a Co. in Port Solent ... at the end of the day, don't leave it too late - as at end of season everyone and their dog will be booking into the osmosis health farms !!!!! Note also that during 'quiet' periods - many co's offer larger discounts to have the work !!

So get some quotes before finally cancelling the deal.

But losing a Surveyors fee is less than making a dire mistake.

Sure if you pay for the repair hopefully the boat will be better.
I would work on the following line: If it had not been diagnosed with Osmosis the neg. price would have been a fair one. Now it has Osmosis, the original price minus quote for repair - 30 % safety margin on the quoted repair will be the NEW fair value.
If the seller does not agree, bite the bullet pay the survey and walk. This way you save yourself a lot of trouble.
No point appointing a surveyor if at the event his findings get disregarded. See the survey fee as sort of an insurance premium. You pay it to avoid greater harm :))
Many fall in the trap of appointing a surveyor hoping he comes up empty thus supporting the decision to buy.

So now you have to weigh up the Pros and Cons and final price ......
remember that any GRP boat if not treated at start of its life will end up with the Osmosis boys working on it .... so take this one as known and if you go for it - sorted for you to enjoy.

BUT make sure you haggle as much reduction as possible - my aim would be at least 50% based on a lower start price !!

I think the form in these cases is..

Get independant view of work needed to be done by either surveyor / yard / both.

Get vendor to complete work at own expense

Pay full asking price.

Everyones happy!!

Unless of course, boat is dirt cheap (which they never are).

Good luck

Boat price was probabaly fair, I knocked it down £5,000.00 from the original, though how can you tell? As far as I knw there is nothing like a Glass' or Parker's guide to boat prices. I do like the boat as well. Suferring the usual doubts etc.

Re: Osmosis Repair-what boat

Westerly Storm, deal has been done, cost of work 5.5k and the price reduced 4,750 so not too bad at all, though I expect there are always a few extras that get thrown up
