Hi All,

This may be a well trodden question but i've not found a great deal and am curious.

I moored off Osea Island over the weekend and find the Island quite fascinating.
I see it's a retreat for various addiction treatments etc and sounds all rather nice.
What is the situation regarding public access to the Island? I saw groups from a couple of 'barges' land on the beach and have a good time. Are there any restrictions or 'unwritten rules' for people landing on the beach?

(I remember windsurfing off the Island as part of a watersports course with school many years ago)

As a side note, it was quite bizarre sitting on my boat and out of the darkness hearing a guitarist and drummer jamming together on the Island. (Made want to pop over there with my gear and join in. :) )

Anyway, I hope this isn't an age old question but any insight into the Island would be interesting.

cheers,

Nick

Osea

I've always understood that the island is private. We have always used the beaches at the eastern end below the high water mark and have never been run off. We don't wander into the settlement or use the beaches in front of the house(s). As you say; these days it's a pretty exclusive retreat (http://www.thecausewayretreat.com/) so I'd expect some security against people just wandering in.

The island was a temperance retreat many years ago so its current use is a return to the old purpose. Google earth has good pics if a few years old.

We were there too on Saturday night on Pyrojames' boat, Croix des Gardes. We must have been at the other end of the anchorage from you. I think this might be you in the centre of the picture.

Couldn't work out where the music was coming from but they were very good. Much better than the pub singer wafting over from the other side!
We had a cracking sail back up to the Orwell on Sunday. Left the Anchorage at 07.00 and picked up the mooring at 12 on the dot.

Thanks guys for the info.

Patrick - Yep, that little shadow in the middle is me. I picked up a mooring buoy earlier and decided to stay the night. Was a really nice sunset.
The players were pretty good. On reading up apparently Bob Marley had recorded in the studio in days gone by.

I did a little trundle down the river in the Tender when it got dark. The island looks quite different at night.

Regarding the privacy, it was kinda what I thought. I guess if you don't upset them, then they wont upset you (by throwing you off) I'll make sure if I do land that I keep to the beach on the East point.
