Don\'t do it! ;-)

The Orwell, in particular, is hideously crowded; on a summer Saturday afternoon it makes the Solent look empty!

The Stour on the other hand is probably too shallow for you...

Just a suggestion...

...obviously if you have your heart set on the Stour or Orwell, the options have all been adequately documented (for my money, I think that Levington is a pretty good call!), BUT what about taking a look at the Crouch? Same sort of journey time to open water, no having to dodge the floating MacDonalds as it roars in and out of Harwich, and a good defined deep water channel. BYH is a bit pricey, but Essex Marina is worth a look.

I would suggest you having a look at the ditch we sail on, the Colne no marina, but excellent pontoons and a good water taxi, but with that draft, you would be somewhat limited as to when you could get out of the river.

Re: Just a suggestion...

Thank you all so much for your advice and opinions.... this is a great forum that has proved itself invaluable to me....

I haven't sailed the Orwell, so I am full of anticipation regarding the scenic views.... my sailing to date has been largely around the southern coast of the west country, and can therefore truly appreciate some of the sentiment felt upon returning to the familiar views of a pretty location.... unbeatable...

I'm likely to be based around the Cambridge area if I get moved, so will probably look to live half way towards the Ipswich area, perhaps somewhere like Bishops Stortford, so an extra 15 mins travelling time between the upriver and more coastal marina will be neither here nor there....but I think there's some sound advice in getting in the car and taking a good look around....

Once again thanks for your advice, I'm almost anticipating a move!

Just to even things up a bit, can I mention the only real possibility at the moment on the Stour - Wrabness. A beautiful setting on the South bank at its widest point opposite Holbrook Bay and the imposing architecture or the Royal Hospital School offers quite a number of deep water moorings on the edge of the deep water channel. Potentially exposed to Northerly winds, but with swinging moorings and sound tackle it shouldn't normally be a problem. I believe that the moorings management has recently been handed on to someone new - I can get the name if required. There may possibly be a waiting list though. It is a world apart from the stour - a lazy river - and a modest distance from Harwich. Road connections are not quite as good perhaps, but quite possible - and much, much cheaper mooring I would think, but no chandlery/club/fuel barge....Just quite beauty as the waders descend on the drying shoreline etc.

Coming sometime soon - maybe - is the marina development part of Bathside Bay dock expansion at Harwich. This is a highly controversial project that is currently undergoing/completing Public Enquiry stage - who knows when or whether there will be berths available.

I draw 13" keel up, so am in drying mud of Holbrook creek on the opposite side of river - well sometimes I mean me, but its the boat I meant if you know what I mean.
