Hi, I'm gauging interest in my parent's boat. They have a 1961 Torch sailing dinghy which we've had in the family for 28 years. Unfortunately in recent years it has been left standing under cover and is in need of restoration.

It is marine ply construction with sliding gunter rig (later ones were bermudan), and cast iron centreplate, varnished deck/cockpit and painted hull. They have the original timber mast but it needs repairing, this was replaced with an alloy one. The original gaff and boom are still there. The only other non original part is the rudder blade, sympathetically replaced with a varnished plywood blade.

I would imagine that at least a portion of the hull bottom will need replacing due to water ingress. Someone would need to look at it in detail to ascertain the extent of restoration required.

Sits on an old wayfarer combi trailer which would be resurrected and made operational, however not sure whether the hull would be strong enough to tow.

So is anyone interested in a project?. Impossible to put a price on it (if anyone has a good idea on how to find a loving home for it that would be appreciated).

Also worth mentioning is that my parents also have the original plans signed by the designer.

Would definitely be nice to have it restored and spared from the bonfire.

The only picture I have was taken in 2006 when the boat was removed from the sailing club and laid up.

Being realistic the Torch was never a performance boat & in the poor condition described it is unlikely you will find anyone to take her on unless you pay them to take it away. Best bet is a vikings funeral.

i.e. torch the Torch?

ha! would be very sad. No the torch was never anywhere near being a performance dinghy, I've never known such a heavy boat!

Thanks for the leads, will look into it. I wasn't really expecting much if any money for it, more important is seeing it given a second life.

My wife has one of these. They are not very common I believe. If it is to far gone and you do decide to destroy the boat, she may be interested in using it for spare parts etc.
