i visited orford haven yesterday and took a few pictures of the entrance tot the Ore. In both shots, you should be able to see a continuous line of breaking waves over the entrance and an area of turbulent water beyond towards the safe water mark. It will be interesting to see how much water there is in the channel when the survey is done, but what is certain is that there is an significant spit to seaward to the North of the newly formed / forming lagoon.

He also now charges for the use of private moorings that used to be free

Renamed the Miserable Mariner.
Davidej, he is indeed rude and grumpy to all, which is embarrassing when you see him in action with visiting Dutch etc.
I have experienced this personally and he better not come near me again or I will tell him to go away in my best anglo saxon.

Has he the right to charge for private (ie not marked NOTT ) moorings

Are we referring to Philip Attwood ??
The reason I have to ask is that I've always found him anything but grumpy.
We've mostly visited in good weather and found him to be fun and helpful.

(although I can't imagine he could keep that up every day - in his open boat . . . in bad weather)

The former HM used his own boat unlike the one the present HM uses funded by newly invented charges

We visited last year and he was good with us and gave us some very good, unhurried guidance on the best lines out etc. He also came and got us off the boat in a complete downpour. Enjoyed our visit

I've met Philip several times and never found him anything but cheerful, helpful and welcoming. He has a job to do and I presume he's getting on with it.

It Comes to something when you have an encounter with an individual and it makes you compelled to search for them on the net. Hence I have resurrected this old thread.

All I can say is what an arrogant surly and unpleasant individual this person is. I think the New Orford Town Trust needs to think about who they employ and how it reflects on them.

I rather feel that this individual thinks he owns Orford

Well, if it it the chap I have in mind at Orford, he was very helpful to us when we wanted a mooring up river of the visitors buoys at Orford to keep us out of an unpleasant wind over tide rolly session. Maybe a slight Yorkshireness in his manners but no malice. His only muttering was the number of calls he receives from yachtsmen seeking a personal pilot into the river; unlike the Deben he is some distance from the entrance and I can understand why he prefers to offer a little phone guidance as oppose to a trek up and down - surely with the technology, entrance plans and buoyage we have these days visitors could/should be self-reliant

Well I am pleased your experience was better than mine. I can assure you however I did not just search the net (and came across this thread) just for the fun of it. Also he has a colleague which if you got him he is very different.

Formally The Grumpiest Landlord of the Jolly, created a retirement job for him & wife, +new motorboat that all require us to pay for the use of once private moorings. Orford mooring holders were able to use my Deben mooring for free

I have to say, in his support, that I have always found him to be a helpful reasonable chap.

If he's the fellow I came across last summer I concur with the opinion of his being one of the rudest people I've ever met.
My crew just stared at each other in disbelief when he told me (barked at me) they he, and only he would decide which bouy a visitor might use despite my adhering carefully to the instruction he himself had previously given us, and then took us about a mile downstream virtually out of sight of the village, we suspected as punishment.
And charged heavily for it too.

Orford's off my list now.
