Orford garage is no more.

That brings back memories of many years that we owned a Mystere with a Dolphin petrol engine, and all the times I had to traipse round to garages like Orford on hot afternoons. I can't say that I remember the lady in those days, the '70s. At that time the character was the butcher on the corner.

Closed a while ago apparently. Making way for more housing.
Just info for those visiting by water who maybe want to top up a fuel can.

Yet another achievement by the so called planing process.
Draw a tight line round the existing built envelope.. Even cutting peoples gardens in half if needs be to prevent any building.
Creates huge demand for rebuilding anything inside the arbitrary line.

Inevitable result is to demolish anything inside the line to save a field which is set aside.

Of course once the access to water has gone, it will never return.

Yes, Laura is greatly missed by the residents of Orford and the surrounding villages. She was the fount of all local knowledge at Friends Garage which closed earlier this year.

The garage is also greatly missed as it sold much more than just petrol and diesel... coal, kindling, poultry feed, seeds, paraffin, bedding plants, eggs, sweets (the school bus stopped outside), plus cycle hire, MOTs and car services.

The original planning application for 10 houses met fierce opposition and was withdrawn by the developer. There is a chance that part of the site might be obtained by a local group who would like to re-open with a fuel pump and some sort of retail outlet that would contain a village shop.

Some of you may know that the nearby Orford Stores and PO was sold off for residential development a few years back and was forced to move into considerably smaller, cramped premises. Sadly this seems to be the price waterside villages have to pay when they become tourist attractions... golden geese come to mind.
