Correlation is not causation.Seems that over half the boats attacked so far had black anti fouling according to the Cruising Association:
.
Black antifoul suspected cause of orca attacks
Read the report. They are specifically not attributing attacks to the presence of black antifouling. However they ask why a significant number of attacks have occurred against boats that are painted black: "“If, on trouble-free voyages, you’ve only got 25 per cent of boats with black antifouling, why on the attack side, have you got more than 50 per cent with black?”Correlation is not causation.
The sample size is far too small to draw any such conclusions.Read the report. They are specifically not attributing attacks to the presence of black antifouling. "...black antifoul is a ‘possible’ concern, and until more data is collected, it can only remain that" he concludes, simply highlighting a curious anomaly in the statistics which may or may not prove to be relevant.
An argument in favour of yachts with full length keels?Possibly the basic underwater shape resembles a marine creature and the Orcas go to bite one of the fins, ie the rudder.
Isn't that the whole point? The sample size is far too small to draw any such conclusions.
What a lovely boat.Definitely . Mind you the rudder is still a lunch item.
My thoughts tooWhat a lovely boat.
Thanks, she’ll be 21 this year and hopefully see out my days
How I wish that also applied to her owner
Boats like that look better and better with age I’ve always thought .
Not when you put black antifouling over itDon't be silly CC turns green .
They are analysing data in terms of keel / rudder type also. Early reports suggested that long keels with keel hung rudders did not fare any better. An argument in favour of yachts with full length keels?
Or conduct a survey - 1,2 or 3 rudders best ?Oh dear!
In the good old days of Practical Boat Owner someone would have written an article describing how to make your own depth charges.
