Orange Gas Hose

Time to replace the orange gas hose in my gas locker - it has 10mm written on it, so which size hose do I buy? 8mm or 6.3mm bore? Guessing the 8, as that's what the Chandler's seem to be selling.

If it has 10mm written on it surely you need to buy 10mm hose to replace it

ITYWF that 10mm bore high pressure gas hose is approx. 17 or 18 mm OD. .

As I'm buying a new regulator as well, they seem to come with a 3/8 to 8mm barbed hose tail. I look at the connection I currently have and the 10mm doesn't look like a snug fit.

It's a 36' yacht - safe to downsize it to what seems to be a more regular 8mm hose?

8 mm hose on a 10 mmm spigot will be stressed and could crack, especially as the those ages. A 10mm hose on an 8mm spigot requires a lot of clamping to get a seal that stresses the hose and risks early failure as it ages.

I have my gas system tested annually, 2 years this time due to covid break. Just tested and leaks were picked up at the gas bottle regulator tail to copper pipe where the hose clamps on. That had cracked due to over tightening.

Use the correct size of hose for the spigot.

Fyi see attached pictures, boat end looks ok, 10mm spigot, but bottle end - looks like 8mm spigot - and this WAS done by a boat gas specialist when fitted!

I shall use 10mm spigot on both ends and 10mm hose.

Did the boat gas speciallist supply that costly MARINE regulator too ?

You need the correct size hose for the fittings you have, but are you actually talking about a high pressure connection between the gas cylinder and the regulator or a low pressure connection between the regulator and the metal pipework.

The orange hose is HP hose but the LP hose is black. Caravan shops and chandlers often only stock the HP hose and supply it for both purposes but the hose tails for high and low pressures are a different design.
The LP hose tails are the ribbed Fulham nozzle type but the HP hose tails are more of a shallow barbed design.
Because the HP hose is reinforced it is less stretchy and its is more difficult to fit onto the Fulham nozzles that the black LP hose . Maybe someone has fitted 10mm HP onto 8mm LP nozzles .???
Modern marine regulators usually have a threaded connection for the inlet , or a direct to bottle connection and a threaded outlet to which the appropriate size of LP hose onzzle can be fitted.

IMHO you would be bets advised to get a GAS SAFE registered engineer to sort this out with the proper fittings and hoses . The goto people in the area used to be Gas Check Marine but they are now Apollo Gas ( See my link)

Isee from the photos you posted while I was typing that it is in fact the low pressure connection from the regulator to the pipework.

The regulator end definitely looks like the hose has been compressed with a hose clamp on to a smaller size nozzle .

Make sure you have the same size nozzles at both ends and fit the correct size of hose for those nozzles .

Prsonally I would use the black LP hose but I must admit that at the moment I have the orange stuff because thats all the local camping shop stocked. Next time I chnge it I will buy the black LP hose

Just a point, I always double clip gas hose connections.
