Just downloaded the latest from Gribs, looks like you'll have it fairly, erm, well, if they can't make their minds up who knows
Have a good trip to all /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
family now unsure - looking at F6 on the nose all the way with rain thrown in for good measure (planning to cross on Sat) - what happened to the forecast in the last 48 hours??

Sounds to me like you have a very sensible family.
We're cancelling a weekend trip from the Deben to Woolverstone and back on the strength of the forecast.
This particular forecast for midday Saturday (Felixstowe inshore) currently suggests ENE F7 with gusts of up to 55mph and "stormy" seas.
If you have 3 or 4 experienced blokes on this trip on Saturday on a well found boat then you may well go.
Sailing with family, and maybe dependant family, (especially young children) is another matter. Instead of a difficult passage with a few laughs along the way the trip turns into a nightmare.
If in any doubt at all I would advise you don't go.
Having said that I have just looked at your profile and realised what boat you have got! The trip is much easier in a Moody44 than in some of the other boats that are going.
But......on the other hand you could put some members of your family off for life.
I'd go in your boat with family in most directions 4/5 but not if 6/7 in the wrong direction was mentioned.
If so, I hope it's a fast but comfortable and enjoyable passage.
At 08.00hrs in my study at home it looks a lovely day outside, with a good but not excessive wind. I'm currently regretting my decision to cancel my weekend's local sailing, but the forecast is still the same.
With all of the other amazing advances in science and technology over the past 50 years, you'd think that weather forecasts would be pretty accurate by now. I've quite often cancelled out in the past and regretted it. Worse still I've been caught out in a forecast for light winds when 51kts was recorded at Harwich. Fortunately it was an offshore breeze, so the sea was perfectly OK, and we got back over the Deben bar. It built up from F1/2 in a couple of hours.
Me too, sitting at home pi**ed off because we also cancelled our weekend away. Nice F3-4 outside instead of the forecast 6-7. What's worse is that I didn't believe the forecast in the first place but didn't have the courage of my convictions.
We didn't fancy bashing into a F6 headwind for 12 hours and having come into Brightlingsea with 30knts over the deck we're all pretty glad.
Very pi$$ed off to miss out on the moules and frites and the general camaraderie of the rally but we're booked into Kovalam for curry at 7pm and we've opened a bottle of wine already.
It's a fabulous day - glorious sunshine etc... just blowing half a gale

Bad luck (but a sound judgement obviously, especially with hindsight). However I think I'm probably more jealous of you than the Duvel, moules and frites brigade - Kovalam serves the best curry I've had in East Anglia, and we're hoping to be there next Saturday (weather permitting). Do you think we should book?
My consolation is that we helped out by pouring at a fine wine client's tasting for 150+ on Thursday, and came home with 12 open full or nearly full bottles, all circa £20 to £25. They've all got to be drunk pretty well immediately, and we're soldiering on bravely. I couldn't risk drinking this much afloat!
well done to those that did it and even better that you made it back safely.
i had no intentions of doing oosende but i did want to do a run from wells to lowestoft and back again,i left wells on friday night at around 1945,i headed west as i wanted to anchor up,so tha i was not tide bound in the morning,my crew was a wee bit apprensive to say the least and at 4500rpm i was getting between 7.5 and 16 knots,i was full ballested. We dropped the hook and then spent an uncomfortable night, the forecast was revised to F6-F7 so i decided to head back at first light,i left the anchorage,i kept my speed down to 3-4 knots as i was getting knocked about,i recon 3-4ft waves at first with a steep chop,my hull would slam periodically,i turned for wells outer marker as i was hugging the coast and im sure that the waves were 5-6ft with lots of spray coming off the top,the turn into the channel was nervy,i told my crew to get out of the b**** way as i needed full visability,i made the turn with the waves on my beam and the wind off of my fore quarter, the depth was 8ft at its shallowest but i made the turn,in a f5-6 with north in the wind.
not bad for a novice /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
