Online Almanacs

The 'good section' about Havengore contradicts in part what we were told last week, as described by LeonF.
With your 2' draught I really wouldn't worry too much - if you go aground, wring out a damp flannel over the side and you'll soon be off again!

Now....Now! Just because I said it was good doesn't mean I'm gonna follow every detail! Thats why I use this part of the forum!

P.S. I do have 6' draught as well if I need it! :)

Does anyone find these online pilots any use?

They sounded like a great idea and I had originally downloaded the Wiley one. But on my semi waterproof, shockproof Itronix with limited RAM it seems to take forever to load. I finally deleted it without giving it a real trial. What I can't remember is if it is independent of being online which certainly limits it's usefulness on line for me, I not only don't have WIFI on my mooring buoy, I find my mobile provider will cut my signal off at low tide. Of course in a Marina they would probably make perfect sense, if WIFI is available.

I had a look at the Yachtpilot that I had not come across and thought it was very limited information for planning purposes. I tried to find if it had anything on Thames Estuary crossing routes and found nothing.

I think I'll stick with my CA Almanac and a few good pilot books. Problem is they are on the boat when you want them at home or at home when you want them on the boat.

The Wiley one is installed on your hard drive and only goes on line to check for updates. I found it useful, particularly the ability to zoom and pan on the large aerial photographs. It doesn't replace the East Coast Pilot and Rivers books but it's a nice addition. And it's free. It does have problems with its installation process and you sometimes need to reinstall, deleting the flippin registry files, which is a pain and something that needs sorting. It would be great to see the Pilot go digital and I'd happily pay for that - but I'd still want the paper copy in the cockpit!
