I posted a message here recently re my toilet problem, I had some very helpful answers - thank you.

When I left the boat on Sunday I pumped the bowl out and turned the lever off. I went back today and the bowl had filled up again - I tried to pump it out but it refused - I had forgotten to turn the lever back on. I pumped it out and left it, the bowl started to fill up again. It gets to the top of the pan and seems to stop, presumably because it is level with the sea water outside.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks for all answers.

Yes. If water and effluent, usually smelly, backfill the bowl it is because the joker valve is leaking. It may be inverted, perished or simply caked with calcium salts. Sometimes the valve itself is OK but the salts in the housing downstream of it are focing the lips open. Solution is simply to remove the old one, clean the salts out of the housing and put in a new one.

Often the other reason for the filling of the bowl is because it is mounted below the waterline. The cure may be to fit an anti siphon valve above that level , for which you will need to form a loop in the water inlet hose.
From time to time when I had guests aboard they would forget to. open the seacock causing the joker valve to invert itself with the similar result.

Two things should stop back flow from the outlet.

The Joker valve is one

The antisyphon loop is the other.

There is no suggestion in the installation instructions for the SL400 that an antisyphon valve should be fitted in the loop so for it to be effective it is necessary for some air to br pumped into the outlet pipework in order to break the syphon..

If there is no loop in the outlet then you are relying on the aptly named joker valve to prevent back flow .
