One step back in boat buying

hmm, I bought a boat with abundant defects and quite enjoyed turning it into the one I want - if it had been perfect I wouldn't have been able to change it. But it sails ok. I agree that a boat that is not fundamentally ok to sail (which is a rather broad category and a bit personal) would be a sad mistake.

Can be very bad to buy a boat that is not perfect in every way. Buying one with defects can really rub & make it a real disappointment. No joy if bits keep breaking, or it does not sail right.
Even brand new boats can be far from perfect.....many have snagging lists as long as your arm.
Wansy is quite far from the sea....my idea would be for him to have a trailer boat....so it can spend all it’s time in his shed where he can devote his time to her...and then take her to sea (or lake) to sail....this will double his hobby time. Going to the coast just to do maintenance will soon become tiresome. Either the boat is close at hand and you spend your time working on her...or she’s far from home under the care of professionals

There's good sense in that, Bouba. A trailable boat can be berthed or moored, overnight or indefinitely, but it needn't spend a day longer there than is good value to pay for. That advantage is outstanding to me now, and will likely decide my next boat.

I'm really surprised that anyone (who is not flat broke... and even then) can find it difficult to buy a boat.

Buying a boat usually brings joy. It's what they're for. Best just to buy one and sail the hell out of it.
Buying the right boat brings potential for joy, but usually amid discomfort and inconvenience, a great deal of waiting around, then effort and such an array of foreseeable and unexpected costs that will wipe the smiles off any who believe what you've written there.

I mean, genuinely, good luck with the upbeat and optimistic side, but Wansworth's too smart to dive in because "it's all joy".

Four years after selling, I keep on being glad I don't have a boat. I want one, of course - that's inevitable. I've had 'em, and I loved 'em, and I enjoy envisaging good times aboard my next. I see fine weather, pleasing passage-making, idyllic anchorages ☺️...

...but I can tell you (all of you, who may have forgotten) that this forum is a fantastic place to be while not owning a boat. As well as pictures and descriptions of stuff we can admire and dream of, there's a ceaseless schedule of unenviable owners' problems, frustrations, fears and costs, ample to deter anyone that ever enjoyed putting their feet up and wondering how to spend a weekend. 😉

We were walking past the slipway at the bottom of our street....and as always I stop to watch the action....and I said to the wife...’do you remember when we like that, a well oiled machine, I think that it was the time when we just worked together and really clicked as a team...’
She replied...’all I remember was you yelling orders and swearing at me....’
Just a little warning to care for your crew....they could mutiny

I wasn’t going to continue posting about buying a boat till I had…..Personally buying a boat readytogo would be very boreing. No lists to make no sitting Ina cafe sketching improvements !
👍
Ooh, We can help you with compiling nautical lists, or which coffee goes with which boaty gear upgrade
But first of course you have to… B etc 😊

Whether or not it was boring for us is irrelevant. You need to go sailing & enjoy yourself. I get the impression ( I do not mean this nastily) that you are too much of an indesisive faffer to do boat maintenance. You need a boat you can sail.
You then need to post your passage plans & we can take the wee wee out of those. But at least you get to sail & tell us your stories of adventures on the high seas. ( just do not tell anyone it is actually the local boating lake)

Hey, just had a great idea for you. What about a radio controlled sailing boat, low initial outlay, repairs low cost, new projects low cost, no worries about head height or side decks, you won't be onboard. Local boating lake, sea, reservoir. Take it with you on holiday. Take it around with you in the back of car. Sail whenever you like. Fix at home. Sit in your armchair looking at it in winter formulating all of next years projects and expeditions. Perfect I would say. You can even a take a punt on a cheap one because if it sinks you won't be onboard. You could fit a cam in the cockpit connected back to 3d goggles for the real sailing experience.

Last time I was in England, walking through a park, there was a small lake....and a group of model boaters....and they attract a lot of attention. The models are really impressive and they demonstrate a lot of skill and time....at one point I had the urge to call out, I have a real one of those !....but I didn’t think that would go down well with the Maidstone crowd....

Or, like a retired engineer of my acquaintance, build a model yacht destined to sail the Atlantic under its own navigation. It transmits its location periodically so you can see how far it gets. And retrieve it when it blows ashore just down the coast from the launch site!

A decent competitive 1 metre model yacht will not leave much change from £3.5K. My friend bought one new for that when he hurt his knee & could not sail for a year. However he found our model yacht club so anal that he soon packed it in & sold it to me for £350-00. I am afraid that I found them no better & also gave up due to the attitude of the members. I sold it on for £350 to another friend & he has packed up after 3 months
It could be fun if the crowd we sailed with were more helpful & less argumentive. As a sailor I know the rules & after one collision I was having a migraine aura. I had to go back to the car park to get my pills & this prat followed me all the way to my car arguing about the protest, whilst I was trying not to fall over from dizzyness & blinding headache.

I now fly model planes at a club where the members could not be more fun. Unfortunately due to my leg & feet issue I cannot stand on the field for more than a couple of minutes, so have had to call a halt to that for a while as I might fall over whilst in control of a plane. Wansy would find it far more fun than model yachts

I get vertigo!

Can one not cruise a radio-controlled yacht? 🤔

Any attempt to involve me in competition would turn me into a keen gardener.
Eventually you would be out to grow the biggest onions? Gotta be done so you can show your friends
Every gardener brags about his carrots, or his runners. it is natural competition.
Not just the sweet pees that they show off
