One for Unit18 and you if you like planes?

What a great video, haven't been to an airshow since I stopped flying (apart from a couple watching from the boat) that's inspired me to go this year.
Brings back memories already....the last show I went to was at Old Warden and I flew a PN68 into the strip, I only had two others on board and not much fuel as its all a bit tight, and as it's a private unlicensed airfield the aircraft's insurance didn't apply, which kind of adds a little kick!
The landing runway was 21 which is across a public road and I asked the pax sitting in the right seat to watch out for high vehicles....I think he nearly had a heart attack... I was serious though as the threshold is sunken down by about six feet almost immediately the other side of the road and you have to hit it, and (there's also a bump where the runways cross that will put you back in the air) at the right speed. We landed there ok, once we stopped and got out, the person sitting in the rear seat said she was almost looking straight into the face of someone standing on the road...
I do miss it.......

Wish I could, but it's been a terrible year financially, just had confirmation re Clerk of the course for this year and my business partners left, which means I'm doing a six day week, and more when Clerking!...and of course there's the boat.
Funnily enough I was at a garage this week and there was a poster on the wall about learning to fly Gyro's which appealed to me, when I looked into it they didn't allow solo hire after gaining your license so it stopped there, shame.

Aren't gyro's supposed to be lethal??

Red Arrows are up to scratch with their training and flying their wings off
We see them daily here and its still a thrill,I had one wave at me the other day upside down at about 400' :)(the plane not me)

This is one of the best Air Days I've seen recently. If you keep your eyes open, there's an amazing amount of different marks.

Even the original 'DeHaviland Comet' like the one at Croydon. (not the airliner)

It reminded me to get the boat back down to Eastbourne this summer for the air day and Red Arrows.

Just excellent to watch, thanks for that, now all we need is a video just as good but with boats in it.

Excellent, and a fine choice of music too.

So now a challenge. There's the usual counter running during the video, and some planes are on screen for a short time I know, but can we name them between us?

20secs - Dakota/DC3/C47
40secs - Fortress/B17
50secs - A380
55secs - A10 Warthog, Lockheed P38 Lightning, F86 Sabre, P51 Mustang

Oops, time for dinner... will the list be complete by I return (and corrections to my guesses!)

Absolutely superb - thank you so much. I had no idea Grosvenor House was still flying - one of the most beautiful and impractical aircraft ever built. There's even a Grumman Duck about 2 minutes in just before the Mossie.

Re: autogyro's I think that's a Cierva in the video. Probably early 30's or so.

I used to live near Reymerston Hall and met Ken Wallis a couple of times - saw him bimbling overhead in one of his own designs on most days. Probably the ultimate Autogyro designer and pilot. He flew the autogyro in whatever bond film it was and holds most of the Autogyro records.

You'll struggle to find one of his machines though - Bensen I think are the main players these days along with Rotorsport. AFORS http://www.afors.com/index.php?page=browse&sec=GYRO have a few for sale - the training and the running costs are pretty cheap. Most run on MoGas and have a Permit To Fly rather than a full C of A.

Want to live forever? :D

Want to live forever?
...............remember the tme you chose to try out the newly repaired auto pilot for the first time mid channel at 3,000ft, and the time we had to abort landing on finals in the fog at Rochester, and the time we nearly spiral dived into the ground whilst trying to find Lydd.....not to even mention the motorbikes!

Yeah who wants to live for ever!

How did you ever survive!

Any way great vid, and what the hell was that funny double wing thing at about 1.44 and then again at 4.47?

Thats one by Burt Rutan, Designer Extraordinaire. Mothership I think.

May I respond to your spurious allegations.

Mid channel at 3,000ft is a fine place to try out an autopilot, there's not much to bump into unless you get very low, however I do admit to turning one of those 4 seat peddly things upside down in Le Touquet half way down a sand dune...but it wasn't my fault.

Ah, the slightly hazy approach into Rochester, I blame (although I was P1) my right side PPL "helper" who decided to misrepresent the precise location of the runway we wanted to use, and I think Mrs Unit 18 gave me enough stick about that thank you very much.

Lydd, that runway's always a tricky johnny to find if the sun is in the wrong place, and I was distracted by the wailing and gnashing of teeth coming from the back of the aeroplane, it's not often you can hear anything over the noise attenuating headsets, also by the curious interior decor, having pictures of flowers and bunny's all over the cabin ceiling's a bit strange.

So there, Mitch, Mitch in a ditch......

This would be the Lydd Airport on Dungeness Spit, almost on the beach and just 3 miles North of Dungeness Power Station - the one with the ruddy great golf course right next to it? Yes, it can be a tricky little thing can't it :D:D:D

I think you'll find the wailing and gnashing came after the spreading of the map across the entire windscreen obliterating the veiw, which then caused the spiral dive which you recovered from saying "most people would do this......which would send you into a flat spin"!!!
You then forced me to fly back to Elstree through thick cloud on instruments, whilst you flirted with my soon to be Mrs Mitch.....

and i never made it into the ditch...I always cleared them:confused:

Nice video...Reminds me of Abbotsford last summer :D. Not the best A380 landing especially if you view the full sequence.
