When my freezer turns itself off, within a few seconds it turns on again. I am sure it has not always done this and should probably stay off for at least 10 or so minutes.

Beside my knowledge of refrigeration, what else may be fooked?

Thanks

You infer it is cooling OK, but not taking a rest between cycles.
That would mean the battery is OK.
Does the thermostat make any difference? - try turning it to extremes.
Could the freezer be losing 'coolth' due to a poor door seal or insulation that has fallen off? - is the weather unusually warm where you are?
Finally could it need recharged with gas - how old is it?
Sorry to reply to your question with more of the same, just trying to stimulate the fault-finding cells.

I had this symptom 2 years ago with a dying battery: below 12V the danfoss unit kept stopping & restarting & etc...

Can also be due to a dodgy electrical connection somewhere.
Check the voltage at the terminals of the compressor and at the batteries with a voltmeter to know whether the batteries are dying or the wiring is poor.

In my case it was a spade connection in the middle of the cable run to the fridge which had corroded badly. Check the voltage at the fridge/freezer compressor when the compressor is off. If it's not 12v or more that's your problem.

Check it when the compressor is on. Then if you have less than 12V either your cables have a problem or your battery is almost dead.

Checking when off does not help.

PS. Been there with the corroded connection problem for the freezer.

Had similar problem, could not understand it as power was getting to the compressor. Turned out there was a poor connection in the switch box, cleaned it up and worked fine. Voltmeter did not show this, saved me a lot of expense as I was considering buying a new compressor.
Like other posters would check out all connections but don't rely too much on an electronic voltmeter
