Times today; an article about a chap called Simpson who is currently 3rd in Finn class world champs and who has apparently been second or third best in world in Finns and Lasers for some years but not appeared at Olympics because world #1 has also been British (Iain Percy/Ben Ainslie). Seemed a shame to me, both depriving him of his chance to compete in Olympics and removing a top competitor from what is supposed to be a challenge to find the best. I suppose it's all to do with only having one representative per country for this event, although in lots of other Olympic events there seem to be several from each country.

Fair point Martin, but Olympic sailing has been like this (one competitor/ nation) certainly since 1948 and probably before then. Anyone entering the five ring circus knows the rules. At least now selection is based on a range of regatta results. Back in the 70's it was one shot qualification. I think Eddie Owen, World 470 champ, didn't make it to the Olympics on this basis.
