Oldest Bukh dv20?

So it looks like westerlylad's engine would be mid to late 1980s. (A rather new one! :D)
Hardly run in! ?

Bukh engine output - and hence the pace of serial sequential numbers climbing - fell significantly for a spell during the early/mid1980s, I believe. I know that Bukh got into financial difficulties around that time, and some boatbuilders (at least LM (Danish) and a British company I've forgotten, perhaps Westerly?) switched to other engine suppliers because of difficulties/uncertainty of supply. The Bukh company was then bought out/rescued in c1985, presumably allowing production to ramp back up again, and development of further ranges beyond the mighty DV series.

Oops, I missed Neil_s's 1977 dv20. That has to be the oldest reported here so far. Also, well done Littlesister, your serial number decoding and Bukh / DV20 history is looking good.
So you suspect my dv20 may be a mid to late 1980's version. That's good to know.
I now wonder who has the last dv20 to be produced and when that was?

I suspect production of DV20s ceased in mid to late 1980s, and presumably the DV10s likewise (they are basically the same engine with a different number of cylinders, aiding economy of production).

I believe the DV36 (a 3 cylinder engine) was introduced in 1979. Though similar in general character to the DV10 &DV20, it is a significantly different engine, with a different layout and many different parts. The DV24 is, I believe, basically a 2 cylinder version of the DV36.

Presumably the market for single cylinder engines about 10hp was drying up, as boats generally became bigger and people increasingly looked to their engines to provide similar performance to their sailing rigs, rather than just a lesser powered 'close-quarters manoeuvring and get-you-home' auxiliary. I guess that once the DV10 was no longer much in demand it became logical (especially at a time the firm's financial troubles were being addressed) to drop both that and the DV20, and develop a 2 cylinder version of the DV36, i.e. the DV24, and produce those latter two models in tandem.

I believe the (later?) DV29 and DV32(turbo) were uprated versions of the DV24 twin, and the DV48 a turbocharged version of the DV36 triple.

The DV24, 29, 32, 36 and 48 are still in production today, alongside many more modern and more powerful engines from Bukh (as ChromeDome indicates above).

If anyone can confirm or correct any of that I'd be grateful.

Sadler I think. My 1984 Sadler 34 had a DV20 from new but I remember reading in a piece by Mike Lucas that they changed for the reasons you mention. I have come across a variety of other engines in later boats, including Volvos and others.

Thank you LittleSister and all who contributed to my DV20 thread. I really like my engine, even though it may be about forty years old and it's a bit of a heavy lump for my wee boat. It has never let me down in the time that I've owned it and I find it very easy to service and maintain. A bit like a classic car, or the Merlin engine, of the hundreds of thousands produced, I wonder how many are still running and when the last one will finally bite the dust!

Hi, after read through please let me take the lead with my very scruffy, but still somehow operational (to my impression as it overheated - temp sensor probably newer instaled as thermostat manifold is without it).

Bukh DV20 ME with S/N: 92089 made in 1972. Dyna started.
Installed in 1973 on Cavalier 32, Auckland, NZ.

Hoping to replace it with younger unit tough for some reason it has only stated S/N without year of production on name plate. Currently Im in middle of rebuild - hard to choose how deep to take it - budget wise.
But makes me now wonder seeing it in detail - how big end bearings and other components looks like on that unit from 72.
