Old Varnish back

Crikey, an excellent read.

Please, please, Paul, if you read this and ever get the time(!), a what-would-I-do-differently-next-time article or blog entry?
Clearly more teabags needed, bloody dorades, eh?, more sails, heavier sails, ziplocked multiple gps units, whatever...

And well done indeed.

Sounds as thought there is enough beating-to-windward credit in the bank to last a good few cruises now..

But the burning question for me is, was the Victoria 38 the ideal boat? Was there any point when you wished you were back in the Biscay 36?

The Vic38 is an excellent strong boat, there's no doubt about that and in a wide variety of conditions never gave me any cause for concern. We've always been long, traditional keel people and I was wondering what it would be like to sail something more modern in design. To be honest, I can hardly tell the difference in terms of stiffness and stability. Also, for the first time ever, we have a boat that we can motor backwards with confidence. The freeboard on the Vic38 is quite low so the decks are wet most of the time. The biggest difference I noticed with the Vic is that she is hugely responsive to sail trim, the Biscay less so. But if I were doing it again (which I'm not!) I'd be just as happy to set off in the Biscay as the Vic.

Good to know. Just interested in the comparison between the two boats as you have completed two (epic) trips in them. I suppose the common denominator would be gear failure rather than design failure....for both vessels. Just remember an extra box of tea bags for the next epic!:o

I had a beer with Neil a few days ago in Kingswear, who you followed back from Horta, said you were now in Dartmouth. Is that your new (boat) home?

Neil looked very fit and said he'd enjoyed a few meals with you. Hope you enjoy your time in Dartmouth, it's a beautiful place to have a boat.

Ta, I've got lots of good pictures and I'll add a few to the blog so give it a few days and try a return visit.

Well done Paul - relieved you're back safely. I very much enjoyed the blog and was on the edge of my seat some of the time. Looking forward to the book so keep some good bits for that.
