Old malibu browning aero craft is it safe to run or what should I do

I’m trying to see if I can get this old boat of my grandfather to work the engine isn’t stuck but she was stuck but some fluids took care of that now the engine is really rough she has a bad exhaust manifold cus it has rust holes but I don’t think this is a reason not try and run it will leak water and exhaust fumes but I don’t want to run it for long now the big problem is inside the engine the cooling channels have a lot of rust also on the cylinder walls on the outside but I they are still kind off strong but I don’t know or it’s safe to run it or the engine will explode and send metal parts flying around so maybe some of u know or I can try it or it’s just to crazy it is t the best picture I know but I’ll try to get a better one .
 
It’s hard to make out what this is a photo of. Whatever it is, it looks pretty dire!

thats the water cooling exit behind the “water pump” and that thing inside it is the outside of the cylinder it doesn’t crumble if hit it and it doesn’t feel like it’s rusted trough but i don’t know or it’s save
 
What make and model is the engine? Without that information no one is going to be able to offer much help. Google suggests the Browning Aerocraft Malibu was available with outdrive/inboard and outboard motors, so it could be anything from either Mercury or OMC.

Engines are not known for exploding due to rust but running an engine leaking exhaust fume are known to kill people

Having someone with experience check it is probably the best option

It’s an outdrive/inboard 120hp mercruiser hope that is enuf if not I wil try and get more specific

I will try and repair the exhaust temporarily to make it more safe
 
It can be run briefly outside or in a well-ventilated space without killing you, but the manifolds are part of the cooling system so running for more than a few seconds for tuning or fault diagnosis needs new manifolds. Unless you're very impatient it's best to wait for that.
 
Fairly common to see this. The exhaust manifold and riser on that engine is a consumable part and can be replaced. As for the worry of the internals of the engine…As far as I know…and fairly often documented…worldwide, there has yet to be a reported case of a GM engine like this…that’s actually rusted right through. Quite a claim, considering these things have been and are still about for the last half a century nearly.
If the rest of it is beyond repair or it’s not viable…you’ll be glad to know that the later derived version, the 3.0 135/140hp, should drop right in with the same pattern.
Your first concern should be around wondering or knowing if it was winterised before sitting for so long If not, it may well have a cracked block at worst…cracked manifold or riser at best. Are the drain plugs still in it and is there water in it still ?

I only want to put money in it if it’s runs so I’m going to try and run it before that but not for ling

I don’t really care enuf about it to buy a new engine. there shouldn’t be any water in it and i have been told that it was winterised but I’m not sure or it’s true. but the engine was possibly submerged because boat was rained full of water but I’m not sure or that’s true because there is a hole in the oil filter and yet there is no water in the oil never the less I just want to run the engine so I’m just removing as much rust as I can from the cooling system I will be putting a new oil filter on it and topping of the oil
