with cars an motorbikes, subject to a variety of rules regarding original kit or otherwise, they have races. Do they do the same for ole powerboats? So i mean, wd someone buy that clanky Nelson and wham along at 40 knots around a course? Wot about burgundyben's old heap that i have actually been fairly pleasant about of late, on account of him having a rather nice new canvas cover? Is there something like Goodwood, with a Cowes-Torquay festival of everything going a bit wrong? There just must be various gatherings where they all go ah but that Fablon isn't original cos it looks quite nice, whereas look - mine is all gooey around the edges with fagburns, and then rip around the bay a bit?

We supplied a red switch panel to a firm just north of the M27 on the Hamble, who were converting offshore powerboats for cruising. The first one was a Cigarette, if I remember right it had triple V8, on test run to Cowes they left the Hydrofoil for dead, but used £250 in petrol just to get there and back.

Well not really, I think there is just not enough of them about to make it worth while, maybe a few old Fairey boats, smattering of Levi's, couple of Tods and a not much else, plus I guess many would not want to risk "crashitybangbrokenhulloopspopconrodpistonsmash" type incidents.

Personally, I thrash mine to within an inch of its life, I'd rather fix a broken boat (its only wood and glue after all) than one that's sat rotting in a marina, I make an effort to see how fast I can go everytime I go out (30.1 knots sunday, dirty bottom)

October saw the very last speed record attempt on Windermere as no concessions were given for it too continue. Classic boat rally may well continue all be it at a sedate pace of 10mph. All in all as of 1st April our boating activitys will consist mainly of excessive drinking /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif no change there then.

Speedboat Kings

If you chaps are in any way interested in old stylee racing boats, read "Speedboat Kings" by J Lee Barratt. Its a history of Gar Wood and the boats he built to defend the Harmsworth Trophy against us Brits, who were determined (but unsuccessful) to wrest it from him.

You have to be really in to engines to appreciate some of the over-the-top engine descriptions. But...strapping 4 x 2650HP aero engines, with open exhaust stacks (in front of the driver!) into a shoe box and racing it around Lake Michigan is something else.

Yes, and the biography of Hubert Scott Paine is a good read, now out of print but available as old stock.

I think most racing powerboats get knackered before they get old, and end up in people's barns, or being used as kindling on Bonfire Night. I remember, after a particularly rough Cowes - Torquay race in the late 60s (cue violins) being allowed on board a boat called HTS which had finished the race but which was a structural mess from the pounding she took - I don't think she was ever raced again.

A few examples of old race boats linger on but often, like The Gardner Brothers' Surfury, they get mummified in museums and suffer the Gypsy Moth IV experience. A shame, when she's such a magnificent boat:

Then of course there are hooligans like BurgundyBen, who buy up cherished classics and bash them to bits /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

tongue in cheek remarks accepted.

But, whilst on the subject, mine cherished and loved and used for its intended purpose, I can think of at least 4 other H28's, two of which raced, that have not been afloat for some years and are all in need to rescuing.

Re: Gipsy Moth about to be demummified

Good news, and looks like it's going to be sensibly done too, with it going to an active sailing fleet

Re: Gipsy Moth about to be demummified

Hopefully something will be done to the CuttySark soon.
Afraid I still cannot come to terms with that NMM building at Falmouth, each time I go down the yacht club look across the harbour. I try and work out how they can justify spending around £35 million on a building and car parks, to hang a few boats in the roof. If we had spent £10 mill on a building, we would have had £25 mill to rebuild the Cutty Sark and get her back in the water, plus Gypsy Moth, with change to keep them going for years.

Tongue was very much in cheek, as you say.

I'd much rather see a Fairey being used for its intended purpose - having the hell thrashed out of it in British waters - than rotting to bits onshore. It's better to burn out than to fade away /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

A campaign to preserve "Surfury" is being launched in the next couple of weeks - see www.surfury.co.uk.Anybody with material, photos recollections of "Surfury" or any of her competitors from the classic Cowes Torquay Cowes that could be included please let me know the site or to chris.grayer@btinternet.com.
Its about time that the UK industry looked back & preserved its heritage as there is so little left. Why is it that there is so little interest in race craft preservation - it dierctly conflicts with Motor Sport who value their iconic vehicles both finacially and with reverence. Is there not room for a power craft "Goodwood" to be kicked off in Cowes as part of the traditional "race" weekend? A bit of enthuthiasm & a bit of sponsorship & subscription from the current stakeholders in the media & manufacturing would be all it would take.

Hmm, are they still going to be able to do that when the 10mph limit comes into force, or will it be just the classic steamboat rally on Coniston which I imagine is just a tad slower.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nah. The Steamboat Rally is on Windermere starting on the weekend 6th August for a week. One of the boats can do about 20 knots, not now of course.
The Classic Motorboat Rally is being held on Windermere the week ending July 31st( I don't know when it starts, it may not be a full week). They will be abiding by the speed limit "Honest Gov".
For small speed boats some of the wash from the ferries and other large cruisers can be a disaster at slow speeds. We seemed to ship about half of Windermere over the screen last year in Steve Carpenter's lovely Healey.
