Does anyone know if you can change the date setting? my old one which I plan to use with a laptop as a chart plotter thinks its 1st of Jan 00, and I think this is the reason it can't find satelites?

Is there a reset or date change option? or is it time to bin it? and should I get a GPS mouse thingy?

Think you will find that the date is the infamous "2000" roll over date.

I updated my 45 at the time, by following the instructions from Garmin - which were very simple. Leave it outside, switched on with new batteries and a clear view. Leave it a long time (mine took all day) and it will pick up satellites and reprogramme itself. Still working.

Not sure that it will work for you nearly 8 years on, but worth a try. May also be worth ringing Garmin. Always found them helpful.

BTW not sure that it has an NMEA output

Go to operational setup.

If you PM me your E-Mail address I can mail you copies of the owner manual.

Is it the GPS45 or GPS45Xl I have both manuals

Google "garmin gps 45" and you get the user manual in PDF if that's what you're after, bizarrely enough I did this last night to check the wiring of the cradle.

Interesting what was said about the year 2000 issue, which I had totally forgotten about. I got my 45 as a cast off from my father earlier this year, and I couldn't get it to do anything sensible like finding satellites. I eventually did what an earlier post suggested, left it outside for the best part of a day with fresh batteries and, after several hours, it sorted itself out.

Tiga - its an old machine, will eat batteries as they all did, will not get a quick fix , and will still meet the serial / usb problem. I know - I had one.

Best advice is hand in pocket and spend £45 on a USB gps thingy (lots on ebay) which is 12 channel, will take power from the usb port and work fast. You can probably flog the old 45 on ebay anyway.

Get a 12v supply hooked up to it and leave it outside with clear view of sky and sats. Some are lucky and have it update inside 24 hrs., others I know of and that includes our Magellan Meridien of similar vintage took 3 days. Forget trying to do it with AA's, battery shop will love you and it's likely batts will die before update completed, meaning a complete fresh start again.
You could of course use a step-down supply to match the 6v into the battery compartment, batts out of course.

Brilliant thanks every one, found the pdf manual online...it runs off the same portable 12v battery as the laptop and nasa all in a bag together, but yes I may get another receiver, just trying to fire it up for a trip next week and it used to work fine.
