What is needed to qualify for an old gaffer..

Does my mainsail count?

Do you have to have a beard?

This is what/who qualifies as an old gaffer

Technical question re traditional rigs;

with a hat such as that pictured, or say Nelsons' tricorn, how the hell did they stay on in any breeze without a sturdy chinstrap ?

There, that's a high level technical question for the inauguration of the forum...

Old Gaffers or not so old as the case may be.
But it must have a Gaff rig with:-
Lots of Wood, lots of of copper / bronze fixings, lots of Rope, lots of Stockholm Tar, lots of Blocks, lots of sail /canvas, lots of paint and Varnish, lots of time and money
and possibly a lot more.

Not forgetting a nice little forum like this to talk about them.
Well done YBW you've got it right at last.:encouragement:

Well since you mention it, the OGA welcome new members.

Sailing By is well worth a look on the site.
http://www.sailing-by.org.uk/

Their forum is now defunct and a new one hasn't started up yet the links you mention are just the main site menu and a general look at the areas.

and they tend to "do" rather than chat on a tinternet forum.
You could put a post on and it would not get a look at in months.

Nice surprise when I opened up today. (I guess the classic boat site will now die)

"What is needed to qualify for an old gaffer.."

Nothing! Just buy one and sail it, if you cant afford one (time or money) then admire them. Be it wooden, plastic, steel or cement. New or old.

Honestly, if you’ve got a gaff rig and an appreciation for wood, tar, and a good bit of varnish, you're halfway there. Whether she's new, old, or somewhere in between, it’s all about getting out there and enjoying the quirks and charm of classic sailing. And let’s be real—no beard required, but it definitely doesn’t hurt the look!
